What is your most amazing shot taken while hunting keeping safety in mind? You can credit it to luck, skill, deflection, or whatever. It can include numerous animals, distance, or a bank shot off of a feeder. Lol!!

80 yards on a fast flying dove. That was one unlucky bird.
Silver spurs and gold tequila keep me hanging on. Pretty girls and old cantinas give me shelter from the storm.

I've killed running hogs at over 300 yards a couple of times, but none of come close as far as under pressure and getting it done as this shot for me. I have a great lease, but love the challenge of public land. Once a year I put myself here after scouting it in late September/early October. No stand, no feeder and a walk in for me of about 3.5 miles. I lay prone in the grass at a predetermined spot that I walk into in the dark and stay all day if necessary. You don't have a lot of time, and if you don't drop your buck within the gradient boundary you're in for a hassle to say the least. This one, I see a doe trot out of the brush onto the river bed and immediately got on my gun (rut was on) and sure enough I see horns in my scope. Doe is now on a full run, and turns directly towards me and is running right at me from about 200 yards. The buck is behind, staying right with her. No way I can get a clear shot at the buck, on the run right at me, I raised my head up so he could see me, went right back to my scope and he had turned towards the bank. It was a perfect sight picture that lasted a split second and he was dead. From the time I first saw the doe to the buck being dead was 3-5 seconds.
An unethical shot is one you take, that you know you shouldn't.

350 yard heart shot on nice 10pt down in South Texas with about a 25-30 mph crosswind. The Model 70 Featherweight .30-.06, 150 gr. Core Lokt hit him hard and dropped him about 20 yards into the brush off sendero. Probably my longest shot with little tracking.

Was hunting with some buddies and right at sunset several hundred yards away a turkey got perfectly profiled and backlit by the setting sun. I had an M1A and horse-assing around I pulled it to my shoulder and snapped off a shot the moment I got settled on the rifle. It took the turkey's head right off. My friends looked at me with amazement not realizing that what I had just done was a complete fluke.

My now ex-wife and I were driving down the dirt road that went thru our lease and a Cottonmouth was crawling across the road. She hates snakes and wanted me to shoot it, all I had was a Ruger Blackhawk but I got out, fired one shot and cut it's head off. A few years later were were walking up the hill from our front pond on our place and another Cottonmouth crossed out path. This time we only had bow & arrows so I took a shot and hit it in the body first time. I missed it the next two tries and had to cut its head off. The arrow that hit it never did quit stinking.

It may not be that significant to some, but if you saw how unsteady my hands are, it was an accomplishment for me. .30-06 off-hand shot on a bobcat at 186 yards (per Google Earth) AND there was still enough to have a nice mount done!

Was gong to say 3 shots that were over 500 yards with 3X9 scope old school before dial scopes were .available or in the means of hunters budget, we are talking 80s and early 90s. Just learn where to hold from practice and knowing the animals anatomy your scope and rifle.
But the cotton mouth post reminded me of a cotton mouth fishing at night. Cotton mouth in a tractor rut where we had been doing some expansion to the pond came out of it at less than 2 feet toward the light in my hand. 22 pistol in the holster on my belt, before I had completed 2 steps back I had shot 3 times all 3 hitting the snake in the head, couple inches behind the head and about 4 inches back of that. My Brother-in-law and cousin that were with me said they never wanted to be in a fast draw contest with me. Happened quick and I just reacted do not really remember drawing or shooting but had witnesses. .

45 years ago while hunting on the Rocker B Ranch in west Texas, my guide and I jumped a nice whitetail. It started running straight away from us. "Shoot it," said the guide. I leveled my 30/06 on the top of its skull thinking the bullet would drop somewhere into its body. It was 70 yards away as I pulled the trigger and the buck did not take another step. It went right through his brain. They guide said that was the best shot he has ever seen in his life. I just smiled knowing I could have never made that shot again in a million years.

Hit a coyote in the rear at about 120 yards in an open field with a 9mm pistol, first shot. Follow up shots to try to put him down hit 20 -30yards on each side him. It was just a lucky shot.
When I first starting deer hunting as a teenager with my new Marlin 30/30, I had a buck behind me in an open pasture around 200 yards and walking away. I had to twist around at a weird angle to take the shot, scoped myself in the nose, I just remember jerking so bad when I took the shot and seeing scope several inches above the deer when the bullet finally left the barrel. The deer hit the ground with a heart shot. I look like a professional hunter but had to be the most screwed up shot I've ever taken. Lesson's have been learned.

Somewhere around 3/8 to 1/2 mile hunting mulies in New Mexico. Shooting from the top of one mountain across a canyon to another. I held about 4 ft over its back on the first shot and the bullet dropped at its feet. Elevated and got it. Lucky shot. Now, at 80, I can’t even climb a mountain.

When I was 12 years old, I had a chance to take a spike at about 100 yards. I was hunting out of an elevated blind, took the shot and saw the spike go down. After a bit, I climbed down and walked over to my trophy as my grandfather was walking up from the other direction. As he was walking up, he said, "Glad you got a deer, but why did you shoot him where you did?" I responded that it looked like a perfect shot to me and told him it was just behind the shoulder. I was looking at the spike on my side of the bush and it was a perfect shot. The spike on his side of the bush was facing the opposite direction and I had killed 2 spikes with one shot. The problem was that they were facing opposite directions. One was a good shot, while the other was not so great.

Not me, but I saw it. Maybe 40 years ago now and it sticks in my mind. We were out plinking on a ranch in southern OK and decided to take the owners john boat out on the watershed lake. It had a 15 hp outboard and we were running across the lake having fun. A couple of mudhens jumped up and a buddy of mine, who wears thick glasses by the way, casually aimed his .22 pistol in their general direction and fired hitting one of the ducks. We retrieved the duck and it was a perfect neck shot. If given a million chances he would not be able to do it again.

250 yds with a Remington model 7 .223. Doe was quartering away from me, she lowered her head to eat some corn and I shot her in the throat, through / between her front legs, blowed the top of her head clean off mmmm hmmmm. Also won a $20 bet with same gun at same distance shooting a book of matches we nailed to a tree after a buddy with .308 took 2 shots at it and another buddy with 30-06 tried twice too. I hit it first shot.
Haven't had it in years but never spit any out. I am a sucker for happy endings and strapped cowboys.

Full run javelina at 60 yards with a PSE Mach 6 bow. His heart was split into 4 equal pieces by my Muzzy 115. The best part was I had a guy standing next to me who saw the whole thing. Couldn’t have done it again with a million try’s.

Wife was w me, which is rare....maybe once every 3 years she goes
Buck comes out and is ranged at 297, locked down on a doe around 830am
Which happens to be the time she is ready to go home and is hungry, he is a 10 and for this place pretty good
He never moved and almost stood on top of her the whole time
At 1030am she said I am getting out of the stand so either sh$t or get off the pot, I was hoping he would get a little closer
Angle iron rest w a 22-250...he never took a step
Which I love the caliber I just had always kept it 150 and in for WT
And she still acts like that was what I was supposed to do to this day!
He would have pushed 200 lbs live weight...
So for all the 22-250, its a varmint round people...it aint and that isn't the only one I've drug home w it

Crow at 175 yards with the 17 hmr. Big game wise after 40 years and killing almost 100 whitetail and a whack of bears the longest shot i have taken is about 70 yards - so nothing special. Bush up here does not typically lend itself to long shots - most are 40 yards or less.

Killed a snow goose back in the day during duck season. Flock came over our blind and I decided to take a shot. They were waaaaay up there. Picked one out and led it about 20 feet. Killed the third goose behind that one. Dead as a hammer. Head shot. Couldn’t do that again in a million years.
Also center punched a 1” square target sticky with my 4” GP-100 @ 50 yards once. My buddy was sighting in his .30-30 and was hitting all around the center while I was giving him a ration of crap about his shooting abilities. He dared me to take a shot with my wheelgun , so I hauled it out and let one fly. Hit it dead center. Also could not do that again in a million years.

This is a 40 year old story. During spring turkey season I was hunting with my 243 Ruger no. 1. I had a group of toms come out to my feeder, about 125 yards out. I sighted in on the largest bird and fired. He dropped like a stone. I went down to retrieve the bird and looked over and saw a second Tom lying down. The 243 had killed the first gobbler and gone through and broke the legs of the second gobbler. I finished off the second bird with my knife. When I drove the truck in to the rancher‘s home, he saw both birds in the bed. He knew I was hunting with my single shot Ruger and had heard only one shot. He had a devil of a time trying to figure out how I had killed two birds on that one shot. I finally told him the story, which he found hard to believe until I showed him the broken legs on the second bird! Lol

I got a triple on doves once. I'd like to say it wasn't just luck. Also, had a dove come in head on & I killed it instantly on the first shot. I lowered my gun & caught the dead dove in my left hand as it was falling.

50+ yard shot in the neck of a rottweiler with a Sig P365 (my concealed 9mm) who looked to have bad intentions. Young daughter stepped away to pee while I was skinning a deer in camp and the dog stepped out of the woods and was heading toward her.

Little different weapon. I was 7 or 8 years old and was visiting my Papa who let me "hunt" his small place of 30 acres. I was using my home made sling shot using marbles. It was made with a forked stock from a tree, leather shoe toe, and red rubber bands from a old tire tube. While walking the fence line I flushed a covey of quail and hit one in flight and killed it. Proudly I carried it back to the house to show Papa and he said it was time for me to learn how to shoot a gun. He went in and got his Steven's single shot 22 and began teaching me how to shoot it right then. I still have that gun BTW. I was the man of the day as Granny cooked that quail for me that evening for dinner.

Hunting with my grandson when we spotted a turkey way across an open field. He asked if he could shoot it with his .243. There was no way to get closer. I told him it was not possible. He was convinced he could do it. I let him shoot, just to prove him wrong. The turkey fell over dead. I ranged it at 190 yards.

2 amazingly lucky shots with an Encore 22-250
coyote at 425 with significant cross wind sitting on the ground resting the rifle on one knee. I told my buddy "with this wind I am going to hold over his rump." Bang, flop!
sighting this gun in at the 100 yard range and I see a butterfly land on the target near my first two shots. Again, told my buddy "I am fixing to shoot a butterfly" and he says yeah right. Bang, flop. We go check the target at I shot the HEAD off the butterfly!

In 1995 I was hunting in Craig on the western slope in Colorado. It was sage brush country very open. Another hunter started shooting at some deer about a mile away and I glassed them and saw they were coming strait toward me. I could see there was a nice buck following several does. They were angling to my right. I was on a small rise and could see them clearly out to 250 yards. They were running at high speed, At about 150 yds I took a standing shoot and missed. There was a deep creek running between me and them about 75 yds away and I decided to get down and shoot from a braced sitting position. When the buck hit the creek bank that was about 40 feet wide he jumped in the air to clear the creek. It was certainly my luckiest shot ever as I hit him in mid air and he collapsed dead in the creek. To put things in prospective I have on 2 occasions emptied a clip on running deer.

More years ago than i would like to remember, was out scouting a hunting area with my trusty Winchester model 190 .22 with a 4 power scope. Several blackbirds were flying high and fast somewhere between 75 and 100 yards out. Not having any better target I gave the first bird a healthy lead and touched a round off. To my surprise the bird dropped like a rock. I retrieved the bird and his head was missing as if it had been removed with a meat cleaver. Yep, pure skill.
The winner so far is the sling shot quail kill.

Bobcat at 273 yards according to the range finder with my 270win using a sapling and my hand as a rest. The cat was facing me and had just popped his head up over a small hill, couldn’t even see is legs. Bullet entered chest cavity and rode around the spine before exiting just in front of his tail.

63 yard shot on a hog with a bow...and only a 30 yard pin 585 yard shot on a running doe...on the third shot. Missed her at 200 and 400, but still As Stx and Bobo like to remind me frequently, hit a mule deer 7 out of 9 shots. First shot was off my knee at 170. Did a mule kick like a heart shot but still ran. Once it made it to 230, realized it wasn't going to fall so put 4 more at it. It went into a drainage, so I reloaded and went in after it. Jumped it at 60 yards and emptied the gun into it. I listed it because I was amazed I hit it 7 out of 9...and I was amazed that it took 7 shots to take it down.

Not an amazing shot but a very good one for me!
Coleman county: 323 yard shot with my Browning 7 mm Mag, Nikon 4X12 X 50 scope with a very hard wind right to left, heavy cloud cover so low light condition in a prone position using a berm from the edge of a wheat field as a rest. Put the cross hairs right in front of her neck top of the shoulder high, bullet hit spun her 360 around, turned out to be a very small doe.

13 years old 222 Rem in an old savage bolt action with a straight 6X redfield scope Off handed shooting uphill at a doe @ 350-400 yards. One shot and she came rolling down the hill. walked up to drag her down to gut her and I'd hit her dead center in the middle of the neck. lmao
My dad, brother, and 2 uncles witnessed the shot. It was absolutely, 100% pure luck and I couldn't do it again for sure.
But, I've killed multiple whitetails out to 400 yards with larger calibers in more accurate guns with handloads and good, solid rests.
High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

Heading back to the cabin after a morning hunt at my buddy’s place in mason, we come across a couple of does. I hop out of the buggy with my shooting sticks and the shorty 6.5 creedmoor and start a stalk on one of the does. I finally get to a spot and get set up waiting for her to clear some brush. Put the crosshairs right above a small window in this mesquite and squeeze the trigger. All I see is splinters go everywhere and the doe flops in her tracks. I didn’t think about the scope height and clipped both limbs of the tree along with another small limb closer to the deer.

I was hunting Himalayan blue sheep in Nepal at 18,000 feet. The winds were at 20 out of the southwest. It was a balmy 36 and we were worried the ice would move on us and leave no return path from our current purch. At about 11 am guide spotted a legal ram. I ranged him at over 900 yards. We glassed the terrain for a way across and finally found a path that would get us to just over 600. It took us three hours to traverse the glacier in those conditions. By the time we got there Temps had fallen and blowing snow had started. We were losing visibility so I decided to take the shot at 634 yards. Now it was a waiting game to see if he would stand before blizzard conditions set in. Finally, about 40 minutes later he stood, turned away and then stepped up on an ice shelf and turned broadside. I made my shot and we saw him fall and slide about 50 yards. There wasn't much time for celebration as we'd already pushed the limit in that weather. We were packing up to go when I glassed him one final time. I noticed he was moving. It was hard to make out but something big was pulling him. Pulling him by his leg... Just like I'm pulling yours.

Coyote, 207 paces running away downhill in the back of the head. Open sighted 30-30 standing offhand. Three witnesses, at least 9 beers each. Very lucky shot.
Killed a limit of blues in NM. No cover with a 6 month old Brittany finding dead bird. Bird were flushing wild the first day and we only killed a few. Switched to my old F/M Red Label 20. It will cut bird in half if you don’t wait on pointed bird. I killed at least half of the bird at 70+ yards. No B.S. It took a lot of shells, but this was 2015 and we were flushing 50+ coveys a day.

Coyote. About 60 yards on the run from the hip on a quick draw with a Ruger MKII 22 pistol. That is the only coyote I have ever had tanned.

I hunt quail with a 12 gauge Citori, 30 inch barrels full and modified choke,(cause that’s what I bought in sixth grade)that I’ve had since 1976. South Texas brush and one comes zipping right by my ear. I snap a shot off and down he goes. My buddy says “There won’t be anything to pick up.” “No I shot his head off.” I said, and damned if I hadn’t.

Here’s 2 of the 5 on the ground Hunting south Texas mesquite flats with narrow senderos. Bolt action 308, started with three in the rifle and was able to reload. 5 shots and 5 direct head shots. Craziest experience of my life.

Maybe not my most amazing shot, but a good shot. While deer hunting from a stand, at first light I spotted a coyote standing right in the middle of the road, he was just standing there and looking my way. I knew he was 500 yards, so I held over about 4 1/2 ft and took the shot, down he went. I was super excited; I called my brother, and he showed up to drive me out to my snipered coyote. When we got there, the coyote was dead, the shot was spot on... and he was caught in a foot trap. Our trapper had been setting traps for coyotes and had set one right in the middle of the road. It was a canned hunt and I didn't know it. I called the trapper and told him that I had shot his coyote for him. He enjoyed the story and said the ears were still his Actual distance 486 yards. Still my longest shot.

I was going to claim I got nothing before I remembered shooting a wild turkey "off wing" many years ago while hunting a clear cut. After working him in for an initial shot with my trusty Remington Model 1100 only to miss, I took a follow up shot as he flew straight overhead at what must have been at least 40 feet. It was purely a reaction more than anything else and I can assure you a wild turkey makes a hell of a racket once it hits the ground from that distance. Yes, the 30-inch full choke bailed me out that day.

I was hunting the last day of buck season when cold ice and sleet set in. A buck came in at a little over 100 yards when I put my cross hairs on him and pulled the trigger. I heard shrapnel hitting the trees and brush as the buck turned and flew 7' in the air over the scrub and brush. Searched for a sign of a hit and all I found was a piece of the jacket laying on top of the sleet and Ice. Was told by the Hornady Tech that particular bullet was know to disintegrate midflight. One of those wouldn't have believed it if I wasn't there things.
They make ammo specifically for hunting for a reason!

We were hunting blues one evening when I saw a bobcat in the brush ahead of us. Dropped the hammer on a #6 high brass and he dropped in his tracks. When I went looking for him I found two dead bobcats.
What are the odds?

This year actually. It was a Panhandle-windy (20-30mph) November day and I was walking back to camp after a morning hunt and was nearly there, when I saw a cull locked down with a bedded doe out in the pasture at the foot of a berm. Been hunting about 10 days and hadn't seen a mature buck and knew I didn't want this guy breeding, so I decided to take the shot.
Got back to the truck and ranged the buck at 235 yards. Went inside to put my 6.8 on the rack and pulled out my .308 loaded with 150gr SST handloads and zeroed at 100 yards. I rested the rifle across the sidewall of the truck bed and felt the wind jostling the truck a bit. I was aimed NE into a NW wind and put the crosshairs just a bit back on the buck into the wind to account for drift and aimed a little high to account for the range. Finally pulled the trigger, and my bullet hit exactly where I was aiming. No drift, no drop. Buck dropped like a sack.
Not impressive for some folks, and I've certainly made many further shots at targets with iron sights, but it's the longest shot I've ever taken on an animal and I'm happy that I was lucky enough that it all went well.

Not me but friend (early teen yrs). We went to quarry to plink, then on the way back he sees a bird on the tele pole. 30/30 goes bang and woodpecker falls. IIRC, bird had no head feathers left. But then I did learn about playing possum a while back. Kick it, stomp on it, pick it up and no reaction when tossing over the fence. Nowhere to be found the next day.

I was on a hunt (coyote and turkey) near D’Hanis. I needed to check the scope on my 220 Swift, and the ranch had a 100 yard range. There were a few people shooting and the son of the ranch owner asked if I wanted to join them. I said I’d prefer to wait till they were finished and I could have the one-bench range to myself. They finished up and we walked to the bench, and the guy started making a big bullseye with a marksalot. Whoa, I said. Let me draw the bullseye, and I made a dot about the size of a 22 caliber bullet hole - the size of your little finger fingernail. He hooted and laughed, but we hung the target and walked back to the bench. They had sandbags, so I got the gun all snugged in. The rifle was a Ruger 77V with a 6-24 scope on it, and I had been shooting it a bunch at a local range. I was dialed in and had great hand loads. So I cranked off a round and he started hooting again that I had missed. The hole was 1” high, but that’s how I had the scope set. I told him, but he wasn’t having any of that, and he was still having fun at my expense. So I asked him if I needed to actually hit the dot, and he said sure, if you can. Still smiling. So I snuggled in again, aimed an inch low and fired. He said “you missed the paper completely”. Well, that wasn’t likely, so we walked down to find the dot was now a bullet hole. By golly, he was impressed now. And the next year, when I showed up to hunt, he introduced me as “the guy that shot the dot”. Apparently he had been telling that story to the customers.
Happily, they did not ask me to make that shot again. Doubt I could have, though I’d have been able to be close, for sure. That was the first barrel on that rifle, and it was amazing till I finally wore it out.
Not my monkeys, not my circus...

I have 2, one was me and one was my dad. Fifteen or so years my Dad, my Uncle Bill, and myself were turkey hunting in South Texas. My Dad was shooting a Browning BPS with a turkey full choke loaded with 3 1/2" #4's. He took a tom at about 28 yds, when we went to get my Uncle Bill was like what in the hell is that and at 78 (taped) yds. he dropped a second bird, that he should have no way in hell hit, let alone killed. Mine was a fluke, I fired a snap shot at a buck with my open sighted .30/.30. He was running away, crossing left to right at about 75 yds, I let 'er bang and he dropped like a penny in a well. Only reason I even took the shot was he was in front of a 30 ft high pond dam.

In the early 1980's I was walking my Father in Law to a new stand on top of a small hill in Llano, where I had found an old tree blind. It was still "sturdy" so I was going to put him in it that afternoon. As we are moving up the hill I hear a bunch of thrashing and a nice 8 pt buck jumps up at about 40 yards and high tails it our of town. It was so dense that I only got a split second of a glimpse at him with my Model 94 open sights 30-30 - I reflexly shot at the base of his neck and piled him up right there. Maybe some skill, mostly luck- but it was witnessed !
Also once during Spring Snow goose season we had no decoying shots but the flock of about 1000 birds piled into the field next to us- which we had permission to hunt. I couldn't stand it any longer so, I belly crawled about 300 yards to get close and then jumped up and ran at the flock like a wildman, raised my 835 Ultimag and fired 3 times at the darkest goose in the group. As the cloud rose, a single mature eagle headed blue goose fell out, stone dead. I have that goose mounted and it's one of my prize possessions of waterfowling .

Many years ago when I had first started deer hunting as a kid my dad took me to a lease and we drove to our assigned pasture, parked and started to gear up. We were at the bottom end of a small canyon and when I slammed the truck door a legal 8 point jumped up out of the brush on the hillside to our left about 100 yards out and ran full speed across in front of us. Dad swung on him and shot and he dropped like a bag of potatoes. We walked over as I paced off a bit over 100 yards to find him shot thru the head. I was quite impressed. Dad admitted it was pure luck as the buck had jumped across the creek and run into dad's bullet....

I shot my Ruger Single Six 22 at a bird that was at least 70+ yards and killed it with one shot. I also shot out a streetlight with one shot with a Ruger 22 automatic that was almost 100 yards in 1978. Glad the statutes of limitations ran out on that. LOL
Now explain why it took me 4 shots to hit an armadillo @ 20 feet with my Taurus 38. I sold the gun within a month after missing too.

75-80 yards Daisy/PowerPoint 880 .177 scoped . Took a shot across the cul-de-sac into the neighbor's backyard the top of an oak tree at a big fat male grackle...shot its beak off dropped it dead.
1983 or so. That rifle probably took a thousand grackles.

My dad and I had finished a morning hunt on the east side of Athens and were driving across the pasture. This coyote gets up and is trotting at an angle away from us right to left. I'm driving, my dad says here is a 22.250 if you want to take a shot. I stopped the truck, grabbed the 22-250 and jumped out, made the shot at 200 yards and the coyote dropped in his tracks. We drove up and I had hit him right behind the left ear. My dad was in disbelief that I hit that coyote at that distance just standing outside the truck. I told him I was actually off, that I was aiming for his ear and missed by half an inch. He just shook his head. In reality, I spotted that coyote, put the cross hair on fur and pulled the trigger. I never told him any different. lol
