Sounds about right. If you didn't hunt there last year there is an app fee. Im going to have to check on that, cause both of mine came back low, im about 80 short of what I spent on the draw tags, and I dont see anywhere that talks about a app fee. Looking in my book, page 8 under "refunds", say's the app fee ($3.00) and the habitat stamp fee ($10), are not refundable. That is for unsuccessful apps

Shows non resident Cow Elk tag is $469, this includes the .25 S&R fee, the app fee, .75 cents for management education fund fee. Then ad the mandatory habitat stamp fee $10 so total fee for app was $479. On refund, deduct the $3 app fee, then $10 HS
Refund should be for $466

I too homeschool my son and plan on taking him this year (as long as my work schedule allows me to go) He will be 13 and loves to hunt.

I got it, so you're the problem.. Home school btw? Been there done that. Of course, as usual. And yes, I'm doing my part to make my children socially awkward, as I hear is always the case. We home schooled for about 3 years or so. I think it is a great thing if you can get a good routine. If done right, I think the folks in the most "awkward" position is the school they go to if they go back to public school.

Y'all put me down and my son. He is 17 and wife thinks we can swing him being out of school for a week.
We were already planning a trip to Colorado this summer for a combo vacation and scouting, but this may work out better as the hu ti g area/unit is already mailed down.

Not real sure how scheduling is going to work out, I have asked for the time off already, but we are actually pretty busy. Hard to believe offshore oil work is busy, but I am in England right now and they don't have anyone to relieve me. Been here 5 weeks already and looking at probably 4 more weeks to go. Well, I need the money so just keep on truckin!

Picked up a pair I have had that very boot for several years now. It is an excellent boot, plenty warm and have had zero issues with it. I tend to only wear it when the temps dip below 30 degrees only because I absolutely love my Zamberlans and will push them to their limits temperature wise just because they are that good. But that Meindl is nothing to laugh at either. I probably should be wearing them more than I do. Great find Cleric

I feel in love with some kenetrek's at Dallas safari club but didn't pull the trigger. I have been debating buying them at 450. This feel close to those but not as good. But they were half the price. I did buy a good comfort insole for them
Between these and my old school pronghorns I should be covered on boots

Well, work is moving me to Tucson. That's actually not a deal breaker for this trip, since Tucson is closer to CO than Dallas, but we just got our October calendar and it's going to put me out of the 2nd rifle season. I'm still thinking about doing 3rd season if anyone's interested. I'm thinking about trying to find a campsite or even a motel on the main drag since it will be quite a bit colder than 2nd season.

At least you can put in for some top tier elk tags as a resident, now.

Hijack- Shawheel, or anybody else,
Looks like I'll be hunting southern Utah during the general season muzzleloader spike only hunt November 3-8, short trip from Tucson and a $393 tag. Paunsaugunt is apparently a tough elk hunting unit, but should be a fun/interesting hunt with some incredible scenery. Wife put the kibosh on the December hunt since we are expecting our first child shortly there after. Since I have a cow elk permit, I can shoot the cow with a muzzleloader during the general season hunt if I buy the extra tag (which allows me to shoot a spike if I happen on one of those as well). Two tags for less than one Colorado elk tag.

Hmm, that might be enough reason to go buy a smoke pole.

Suffering for a week isn't a big deal. Killing an elk is. The better shape you're in, the better your odds. Think of it that way.

The more I suffer now the less I suffer on the mountain No matter what you do it will always be a sux fest on the mountain. Difference is how you prepared for it mentally.

But if I can be in better shape that is one less thing for me to worry about. Agreed the mountain will always beat you down. But basic things like cardio will help

For sure. I train pretty hard for my hunts but I think it's the metal aspect of pushing yourself through the training that helps the most on the mountain. With that said I think it's a mental toughness that you can only get with training.

On the issue of homeschool: I really enjoyed freedom of doing whatever the heck I wanted when I was homeschooled, namely hunting. That's the main reason I had to opt out this year. And next year I'm in college full time, so I dunno if I can take off 2 weeks from that (school in CO would solve that, methinks )
