I think Ford is playing mileage games with these trucks. Low ratio rear ends are fine for driving around town but not for towing. From everything I have read if you get a decent rear end in them then the MPGs are not nearly as good. The other thing I am reading is driving at a realistic speed on the highway drops it quite a bit also. I know GM was putting some real low ratio rear ends in at one time trying to pump up the mileage numbers.

Big difference between a turbo and a supercharger, particularly twin-screw superchargers. Twin screw superchargers are NOT 24/7. They have a bypass valve in them that only shuts off at WOT allowing you to build boost. They do give you more torque than you know what to do with though as soon as you go WOT.

I have a 2011 F150 King Ranch 4x4 with the 5.0L. I get ~19 on the highway and ~15.5 around town. I get about 14.5 highway pulling a 2200lb trailer with a 3800lb Mustang on it. On e85, I get about 65% of that smile

FWIW

Update:

Finally got out on the Interstate. No trailer.
Weatherford to Baird 75-80mph = 17.2-18mpg; 71-75mph = 18.6-19 mpg. No cruise!

Eased around on drilling lease (1000 acs) for about 1 hr checking wells/new locations and sat for about 45 min with engine idling & a/c on watching crew. Left site and drove to Clyde for a Whataburger.

Reset at Clyde & used cruise control with traction control off from Clyde to Wal-Mart in Hudson Oaks (East of Weatherford) 68 - 72mph and got 20.3mpg. (Best I saw was the flat stretch from Clyde to Eastland 23.5mpg @ 70mph)

This is a 3.5 EcoBoost FX4 with Max Tow & 3:73 gears using 87 octane gas! Truck pulled good on the up hills in cruise and included my overrides to pass slower traffic.

I think it's a keeper with 11,300 lbs towing capacity. I found that if I keep my foot out of it (go a few mph slower) I can get some decent mileage, but still have lots of torque when I need it.

Granted the chevy 5.3 pales in comparison to the power of the ecoboost, but I drove from San Antonio to Hebronvile 75-80 Drove around on the ranch and let it idle with A/C on with wife and mom in it while I painted 3 protein feeders with a brush, filled 4 feeders, set out 4 trail cams, and and picked up a couple of shot deer. I had about 500 lbs of junk in the bed so not much on the way to ranch. All driving on the ranch was done in 4-hi. My truck is a 2011 crew z-71 and I got 17.2 MPG Hand Calculated when I got home for the round trip.

Not bad!....I bought mine for double duty. Towing a 35ft travel trailer with camping gear in the truck to Colorado several times a year but still get decent mileage when not towing & I didn't want a diesel. If I had been just looking for a driver with the occasional trip to the lease pulling a utility trailer or smaller travel trailer I might have gone Chevy. (For what it's worth I looked at Chevy first, but couldn't find the towing combination I was looking for in a preowned truck!)

Chevy 5.3 only had a 3:42 Axle available. That put the Chevy 5.3 at 15000 combined weight and 9500 max trailer. The 6.2 Chevy was at 16000 combined weight and 10400 max trailer (this was close). When you do the numbers (subtracting load in truck from trailer weight) I was right on the edge of being overloaded and underpowered in the mountains. up

No doubt I wanted an eco, but when I bought I was still wanting to see how they did a little longer. Dont get me wrong I will give my truck a workout, Ive already had about 7k behind it and headed to the ranch and it did fine, but do believe the eco would handle it better.

I traded in a Hemi on my last ecoboost and had it 14 months before getting a powerstroke for more gooseneck type hauling.

The ecoboost lives up to the hype plenty of power and great mileage. Pulled a 20ft bass boat a lot with great mileage and power. 4.5 mpg better than the Hemi towing and 4.9 mpg better highway.

Friday I will have had mine a year. This morning trying to accellerate onto the interstate, it just starts shaking VIOLENTLY, thought the teeth were going to come out of my head. Not happy, not happy at all. Less that 17,000 miles on her. I already have an appointment for service on the 22nd because I could tell the other weekend that something wasn't right. Waiting on 8am to call and give my salesman an earfull. Afraid that if I wait till the 22nd I'm going to blow it up. Not only did the check engine light come on, but it was FLASHING.

I would drive it in to a ford dealer park it in the service lot and they will get to it. Driving it like that will only hurt it more.

I've been eyeballing the new eco boost or possibly going the diesel route with the F250 or F350 as I'm averaging 9.5 - 12 mpg in my Raptor.

Well, I put my foot in some arses and got mine in for service and they have me a xlt supercrew 5.0... and absolute turd compared to my ecoboost fx4, but at least they gave me a truck. Tried to give me a Fusion at first. HA, told him I'm a hunter and I'll mess that fusion up in no time.

It is a sensor in front air dam, it's on national back order. They may reflash it and tell you it's fixed and it might work but all things point to the sensor. It only happens when it's cold and wet.

In the future, when the CEL flashes if you stay in the throttle it will eventually stay on solid and they will be able to pull a code. If I was a betting man I would say cylinder 6 misfire.

Don't ask me how I know...oh and FYI, it's even worse if your pulling a load wink

Makes sense. It was fairly cold this morning (low 40's) and raining. Hard to stay on the go-pedal when it feels like the engine's gonna go. Really freaked me out.

That's a bold statement when after reading here and testimonials elsewhere it appears that many guys with the new Ecoboost aren't getting much better than my Tundra are. Its gotta suck getting a truck you think is gonna get 20 mpg on the highway and it never gets better than 16,at least I knew what I was getting into when I bought my truck!

If I would have made the trip I said with an empty truck and didnt have the idle and pasture driving time and could have kept it under 75 no doubt I would have hit 20 mpgs.

I doubt your tundra gets 16 going 75-80. Good strong truck they are, but they drink like a fish.

You can get 16mpg in a Tundra doing 75mph on the highway, that's not a problem. I don't generally run 75 though when I am on the highway for a good stretch, usually its 80-85 and I get right at 15.

All I was saying is that I was under the impression that these Ecoboost F-150 's got a lot better than what many of the guys here and on the other forums are saying they are getting. Theres always the one guy that claims he's getting 20+ but most are saying they are getting 16-18 on average on the highway and then you have to factor in how different guys drive and some trucks are 2wd , 4wd, different gear ratios, body styles,etc. I don't know much about how strong the motors in F-150's are but I can tell you that after having driven a good bit of F-150's with V-8's at work and buddies trucks........they don't have the power that the 5.7L Tundras do, its a very obvious difference. So now we are back to a V-6 with a turbo charger with questionable dependability over time and mediocre fuel mileage......doesn't seem to make me giddy at all.
