I also agree with the climbing stands for east texas. Nothing better than watching wildlife walk right underneith you. I sometimes like to drop bark or pieces of branches to see their reaction. Its funny watching them check every direction but up.
Rifleman where abouts in trinity county did you grow up? My place is in between Trinity and Groveton (Friday rd then evans ln).

I didn't ever live in Trinity Co. although from where my parents live it is a 10min drive to the county line (beer store) and 15 minutes to Apple Springs. My dad was on a lease right off HW94 once you cross the Neches River..... and my parents had land just outside of Nigton. Didn't ever see much on the land in Nigton, but always had a lot of deer on the other place.

edit: never have hunted out in your area, but got to go sight seeing. My old boss was on a lease that was owned by Ted Turner out in that general area and he felt I was good at filling feeders.

I use to hunt a lot in Coleman and Comanche counties. Damn near tripped over deer going to the blind. The funny thing was you could shoot a deer inside the feeder pen, drop it in it's tracks and when the deer that spooked would come back 15 minutes later they would just step over the dead deer and continue eating corn.

Four years ago when I bought my ranch I was lucky to see a deer or two every other weekend. After a couple of years of not shooting everything that moves I have deer all over the place. I am now disappointed if I don't see at least 15 deer every weekend.

I grew up hunting deer on public land. You very seldom saw any deer and it was hard to stay focused on hunting. I will say getting a buck off public land is one of the best feelings in the world. You really get the sense that you earned that deer. I was born and raised in the big city. The only time I have ever seen alot of game was the pronghorns I saw in New Mexico. Getting the opportunity to see 20 of those goats in a field was a real treat for me. Hunting public land really does suck.

I always go for meat. I always see does, and some bucks, and try to cull out the best. Now on the other hand, if, like, Muy Grande steps out, well yeah.
Hey doe tastes better, and since I'm going for meat, what do you think I'm going to shoot? The horns on the wall may let me tell a story to my friends, but the doe in my freezer feeds me. Buck meat s@*$#&.
Yeah I hunt it hard. But not for horns. No offense to those that do.
Now what ticks me off is finding bucks with their heads off on the side of the road. We get a lot of that where we are.
HEY! We have a deer drop-off for churches here city boys.
Saw 5 nice bucks going to waste last year in the ditch.
4 the previous year.
Ticks me off.

IMO the population of deer has been growing at a tremendous rate. Less than 15 years ago I can remember it being a great day if you saw a deer. Now in the same area I see 10 to 15 each time I sit. This is in Wise & Jack County.

I personally think the AR's are more for age structure than antler growth. A better age structure benefits the entire herd and of course better antlers are a result that comes with it.

I hunt a place in navarro county off and on (some years I do some years I don't), and you will typically only see 5-8 deer from october 1st to january 1st, but there are lots of pigs. I consider the navarro place east texas. I have other places out in the cross timbers that you will rarely sit and not see at least 2 or 3 deer, if you get lucky you may see over 10.

Our deer population has exploded in Mills county as well over the last few years. This area was heavy populated with angora goats and wool producing sheep from the 60's thru early 90's. When the wool and mohair incentive's ended the angora's disappeared along with most of the wool sheep. This left a huge amount of browse for the deer since they eat the same stuff and cattle don't care for this. We don't lease our ranch property nor do the ranches surrounding ours but we have about 25 family members that hunt and we expect to see lots of does and at least some bucks every morning or evening hunt.

It really depends where I am hunting. On my wife's family land there are stands where you have to walk around the does to get in and out (down in the river bottom) and there are stands on top where you won't see a single doe, but every couple hunts you will see bucks... Kinda strange.

Our company lease in Lampasas is just deer everywhere all the time. It's nothing to see 30-40 deer in one sitting.

On my family land in Cherokee Co I've hunted Fri-Sun every single weekend this season, archery included, and I haven't had a single hunt yet where I didn't see a deer. Granted, the most I've seen at once is 6. 40acres.

On my friends land in Nac Co we usually see a few deer every time with the occasional rare times where we see 20+. 1000acres.

Hunting Schleicher Co for the past 8 years (until this year) we would see 8-20 every hunt. 7000acres.

Regardless, when I go out I'm just hoping to see deer. I enjoy just watching them. I've only harvested 2 deer (doe/buck) in the past 4 years. I did miss 3 though..lol..damn archery. =P

Its rare to sit down in a blind and not see some type of game animal(deer/hog/turkey),but it has been known to happen every now and then.

It depends on where i am hunting. On my ranch, i hope to see something...although this season has proved very well in seeing things. Haven't gone out without seeing a deer. Go figure. On the lease if I don't see a deer I will see something else. Very unusual to not see one thougb.

This is my 3rd season hunting in East Texas, and I've seen a total of 3 deer.

I hunt in the balsora/boonesville area here in wise co and when I'm n the stand I hope to see one but driving down fm920 at night you have to be careful they'll jump right out in front of you

I guess we have nocturnal suicide deer up here lol

After reading some of these I guess I should be thankful for what I have!! I sometimes get down when Im not seeing the quality of deer that I would like to see.. I think ill stop doing that and remember that it could be a wholelot worse..
