Man It frusrates me to all get out when I here people bashing east texas about deer numbers. Its thick with cover, edible vegetation 10 months of the year and has a lot more precipitation (most years)than other parts of Texas. Yes the land is cheaper to hunt which brings in some who have hunted other parts of texas where you see 10-20 deer at the feeder everytime where prices have sky rocketed in the past decade. True in most places in East Texas you do not see the deer at the feeder as in other places. I love to see one deer come out and eat. If I don't I know I have to go into the woods to hunt them. I for one don't like to drive a long distance for my groceries if I have all the food I need right around the block. You have to actually hunt for deer in East Texas. I use feeders just like everyone elso mainly just for the rut and for family and friends who only come out to the country once or twice a year. They like to see deer/wildlife.
Man, sorry for the venting. I love Texas and all its regions but east texas does it for me. I like to look up to see a tree top. And I love the shade. I hunt in Brady Texas once a year with BIL and love it. Beautiful country. But when driving home, the first landmarks I look for are pine trees. Sorry Texaswhiteboy. I hope I didn't ruin your topic. This is just my opinion.
i couldnt of said it any better. agree 100%. i love east texas.

I saw ONE spike all last year. Had tons of pics of does and large bucks all at night. I finally gave up last year and let the deer win. I know this year will be better.

Im learning to hunt East Texas a little better each year. 2 years ago I did not see a legal deer while hunting. Last year I saw a shot a doe and spike on the first two days of rifle season and only saw one more doe later in the year. This year I plan on trying some new stuff, like rattling and using scents and moving around more. I have pretty much given up on hunting feeders because I have yet to see a deer (while I was hunting anyway) go to a feeder. The deer we see are just passing through and I think they know a feeder means danger. Plus, in East Texas there is, especially this year, so much food for them that they dont care about corn. The two I shot last year were nowhere near a feeder.

Looks like a lot of east TX hunters, we hunt Montague and its seems like about 50%-50%. but to everyone who says it just getting out and having the oppurtunity to relax is 100%. I am looking forward to the new AR's this year, I think it will clean up some of the inferior genepool we have had for a very long time, although it is probably going to effect the sightings ratio IMO.

I think ARs have helped our inferior genepool grow cause we can't shoot them. Our "inferior" bucks have mostly tall narrow racks, less than 13". Personlly, until I find a way to cook and eat antlers, I don't really care what kind of racks they have.

Curious as to the acreage folks are hunting in East Tx where they aren't having much luck seeing deer.

I always go hunting hoping to see deer, but I live in wildlife rich south Texas, and have the advantage of hunting hill country deer with a high population and also the brush country of south Texas, where the Muy Grande roam.
I've also hunted a little east, and the populations were a little thin, but I still saw enough deer to keep my interest up, and that is one of the AR counties that have had them for a while and it's getting a whole lot better each and every year.
You guys that just went under the rule just give it time and don't listen to the naysayers as a lot of the problems that they have isn't because of the AR's, and they won't see a fix any time soon.
Be patient, and give them a chance and you'll see the results down the road.

Don't take my post as a bash to E. Tx. I love hunting where my grandfather was born and raised. Where my great grandfather homesteaded the land for $1 an acre. I have roots there and love it deerly (pun?). I broke away (after growing up hunting Freestone county) for several years and hunted Coryell, Concho, and San Saba counties. Killed my biggest buck in San Saba. If I get the buck I've been hutning for in Freestone for the last two years I'll move my San Saba mount to the office and very proudly display my Freestone mount in my living room. All hill country leases were great leases in their own way. But I found I have a lot more fun at my "old home property". Plus that, I can now take all that money I used to spend on a lease and put it into habitat improvement. Then save money on top of that by not driving 4 hours+ to hunt.
I knew what I'd be getting when I left, and knew what would happen when I returned. I don't regret it for a minute on either account.

800+ acres surrounded by farms and private land.

I can count on 1 hand how many times I've sat on a stand for a morning or evening hunt and not seen anything in the past 5 yrs. I usually have 1 of those hunts every year where weather doesn't cooperate and the animals have more sense than I do. I love hunting deep East Tx, epending on where I'm at in the area we can see between 2-30+ deer per sitting.
I grew up hunting here in Cass and Morris counties. I have no problem seeing deer. Do I see 100 standing in a peanut field like in the panhandle, no, but I hardly ever get skunked and have had as many as 22 come by in a morning hunt and up to 16 in an evening hunt. Deer density in Cass is pretty dang high, you just gotta hunt where they are. Corn feeders dont work as well when there are acorns on the ground. Climbing stand is the best invention ever for E TX hunting, you can move and go where they are.

Amen to that. I grew up hunting Angelina Co & Trinity Co, but now I mainly hunt Nac & S.A. Co(s) and can't complain one bit about the deer numbers or the horns.

I guess i have been lucky the last 7 or 8 years..The guys i hunted with always found leases where the deer were...I am spoiled..if i dont see 15 or 20 deer a day thats a bad day..about 50-50 buck- doe ratio. Most all shooter bucks(that i didnt shoot)were at the beginning of the season and i would always wait and "settle"for something smaller..

Guess the secret is getting out. I was under the impression that our little area didn't get that much pressure. (Other that from those folks who road hunt and use spotlights)
