Sometimes you just get lucky. Next to the last call on Thursday, we were set up on a gravel pit calling to the SE. We were on the west side of the pit and I was farthest to the south when two coyotes rolled up on a pile of gravel to my right. I shoot left-handed so it was a perfect situation for me as Steve and Levi were to my left along the same gravel bank.
I switched the FREQ to Money Bunny and the male rolled off the pile and down into the open pit, leaving the female standing on the bank. My plan was to let the male roll out into the open far enough so that when I killed the female, we Levi could take the male that I expected to break away from me at the report of my Ruger .223.
I let the male get about 30 yards into the pit and then killed the female. Racking another round into my rifle while watching the male, I was shocked to see him break toward me. Now I knew that this second dog was my target as well and swung to my right in an attempt to make a running shot. I got lucky and had two dead coyotes in less than 5 seconds. Not too bad for old man shooting a bolt action rifle.
I haven't reviewed the footage as it will be aired on CARNIVORE but may have been pulled off in the 3-4 second range.

I have killed three deer in my life, of those two of them were within the past two years. I say that to put perspective on how new I still am to deer hunting. I am beginning to realize, a lot of pre-conceived ideas about these animals that simply are not true. I have experimented with every type of bait and attractant I could get my hands on and strictly observed these deer without hunting them on my place. One thing I learned, many of these attractants seem to scare the deer away. Especially the apple scented stuff. Second, you might have found something that the deer hammer, they will get tired of it and stop coming after a while. Even if it is something like whitehouse deer feed. And third, these animals are too curious for their own good.

At the time I got these pictures, I had no footage of deer in daylight in weeks. After gun season, I assumed they were in hiding. Well, I decided to have some fun with tannerite. I used a .308 with a brake that was much louder to my ears than the tannerite itself. Would you believe, within about three hours I had deer come to the spot I shot the tannerite on a string?

This is basically the the first time deer came within view of my camera in daylight in weeks.

If you are curious about my findings, overall the most attractive thing to deer pre-rut in my limited experience is the white house deer feed. During the rut, the doe pee and the mock scrapes seemed to get the most attention. I did use a dripper with the advertised dominant buck urine, and sprayed a crapload of doe pee everywhere.

Post rut, tannerite is the only thing they really came to in daylight 🤣. I barely saw anything after dark. I thought somebody killed all the deer 🤷

Other than that, the natural browse and plain old corn were pretty attractive. With alot of chinkapins on the ground, they ignored everything else most of the time.

This is 1954 Made Winchester Model 94 in 30-30. So this is clearly one of the "Pre-64's" that collectors prefer. This lever gun could almost pass for new...yes it's that nice. All original Bluing, original wood and finish, and the action is very smooth. There is some light reflection on the gun that might make it look like there's a scratch, but this gun has no wear, no scratches, nothing. There are a few small handling marks on the wood. Pre-64's in this condition are easily bringing $1,500-$1,800 all day long, but I've priced this one at $1,195. Why? Because the original owner did engrave his DL# on the gun BUT he did it ever so small and very light and it's on the bottom of the gun on the "Link" piece, so for about $60, you can replace this part (beneath the lever) if you choose. But the engraving is so small and light, it's barely noticeable so I just left it alone. Again, the rifle is in amazing condition and all original. Located in Plano. Looking for additional quail hunting acreage for next season and beyond, North, West, or South Texas. Need to be able to drive off road in the pasture. Lodging would be nice, but not necessary.
