I am about to hand load for the first time ever. Fortunatly, my neighbor has the experience and the equipment.
I have Sierra 168gr. HPBT match. Once fired (in my rifle)Remington brass. Hogdon 4895 and Winchester LR primers. I have written down at home the trim length and OAL from a post on another shooting site.
Sound like a good recipe? Any suggestions?

Sounds like a good load to me. Have you done research on the Powder weight?
Take the time to measure out the OAL for your specific rifle and go with the longest that you can get away with (without exceeding the max OAL with that bullet)

If anyone is interested. Case prep length 2.005", H4895 41.5 gr. 168 gr. Sierra HPBT match, OAL 2.82".
These rounds will just fit into an AR-10 magazine. They printed 1 7/8" 5 shot group at 200 yards on Monday.

Not bad...is there a 200 yard range up that way? I haven't found one anywhere close.
What length AR-10 are you shooting?

My range is on land owned by a friend of mine, it's 100 acres in Fannin County with nothing around it except cultivated land.
I set up prone in the bed of my truck at 200, 300, 400, and 500, yards developing a dope chart for my rifle and scope.
My AR-10 has a 26" stainless heavy barrel...I'm thinking of selling it and putting the proceeds to a bad a$$ bolt action.

Nice set up. How did you group at the longer ranges?

It didn't do as well as I had hoped. At 300 the best group was 6", at 400 the best group was 12", and at 500 the only group I shot was 18". But I had some 150gr. Rem Core Lokt that I was shooting up and keeping the brass for future hand loads. I don't have my notes with me but I didn't shoot near as many handloads as I did the Remingtons.
I had a 10-15 mph gusting cross wind I was contending with all day, and from about 1 pm on my black bedliner was cooking me every time I layed prone in the bed. I think I will build some kind of awning that fits in the bed stakes or lay down something to insulate me from the black bedliner.

My PSS 308 LOVES Vihtavuori N150 powder under a Sierra 168 gr. HPBT Matchking. Averages around 4" @ 500 yards 5 shot groups.
If you are serious about accuracy, you might want to try some Lapua 308 brass also.

Proven loads for my .308; all have been sub MOA out to 600 and MOA out to 1K
175 Seirra BTHP, Varget 44.5gr, 2.84", 2660fps 155 Lapua BTHP, IMR 3031 43.5gr, 2.86", 2880fps ****The 3031 is a published MAX LOAD**** if you try it, work up to it!!!!
I think max mag length in Remy BDL is 2.84"
+1 for the Bergers as well

I just shot my first 308 reloads from my Rem. 700, and it didnt like them at all. I got about a 3.5" group. Barnes TSX 150 gr. IMR-4895 44 gr. Rem brass CCI primers OAL 2.82 I will try another load later this week and update.
It shoots Rem Corlokts 150 gr sub moa at 100.

Like my post said, this is the first load I ran through it. I plan on tinkering with it until I find the sweet spot.

I've heard lots of people say they think Core-Lokts are great. I have never had a rifle that did well with them. My .308 likes the cheaper UMC over the Core-Lokts.
I will not buy any more Core-Lokts and no one can make me, so there.

i get better results with Hornady Interbond ammo than any handload i've used so far. I shoot a Browning Stainless Stalker .308, and i can hold .75 moa consistently out to 300 yards with factory interbond ammo. My best groups are very close to .5moa.

Dang it! I can't find Varget in a shop so I don't have to pay a Haz-Mat fee.

I have been trying to find a load for my rem 700 in 308 for a while now. I am finally getting closer. This is Remington brass Remington 9 1/2 primers 39 grains of H-4895 OAL of 2.758 Shooting Sierra HPBT 165 gr 100 yards Now if I could just get those 3 touching, I would quit trying and settle. But that is the joys of reloading. [img:left] [/img]
