I would have said the same thing! I love mine, inside of 200 yds, you cant beat the performance compared to the recoil

I think the .25-06 may be part of the reason for the decline in popularity of the .243 -- if there has been one. A lot of people do use the .25-06, but not as many as use the .270 or .30-06.

I'd say its a toss up between 30'06,270, and 7mag everybody I know has atleast one of these exept for myself. But in about 5 more years it going to be 300WSM, 7mm WSM, 270WSM,and 25 WSSM. The most popular at my house is the 22-250 ( I had to say that for CHC)

I love the 25-06, but I don't think its even close to being the most popular. My brother inlaw loves his, but he uses a .270 now.

Have to agree...I love that caliber but it isn't near as popular as others. At least in Texas.

Would have to agree with .270 or .30-06

I won't hunt in Texas without my Remington Model 660 .243, nothing has run more than 20 yards on me. My father, however, loves his little .260, it's a nice compact gun if thats what you're looking for.

Cause it's overkill for these little Texas deer, although the one advantage is the deer is pretty much gutted and quartered after shooting it with .30-06.

I have seen a lot more meat destruction on a deer from a 243, than on any I have seen killed with either a 270 or a 30-06. There is no such thing as overkill until you get into something like a small military field piece using explosive projectiles.

Really? Was there anything special about the shot from the .243 as far as hitting bone or something? Just curious because all the deer I've shot with my .243 have small exit wounds. Might give my .30-06 a try this year, see how it fares.

I shot my deer last year with a 30.06 with no meat destruction. Double lung shot at about 150 yards and I think the heart was gone. I was using the Federal premium 150 grain loads with nosler tips. It did run about 40 yards.

I suppose that's right, thinking back on it, most of the deer I've seen shot with a .30-06 were poor shots, either gut shot, shoulder shot, or front shot, in which case would explain the destruction. A good heart and lung shot shouldn't destroy any meat.

the most used caliber these days for deer -- I'm talking in Texas only.
I would think the highest numbers used is still the 30-06! 2nd would be 270 3rd 30-30 /243 James

It's hard to beat a 30.30 in NE Texas, ya know.

Yes, there was something very special about the wounds. In every case, people were using the cheapest round they could buy, which at that time were 90 grain hollow point varmit loads. For those that could place their shots behind the ear or dead center the neck, the kills were spectacular. Shoulder shots weren't. It is sort of like what the guy I hunt elk with in Colorado says, and he has been a professional guide for 30+ years, he has seen more elk wounded and lossed with a 7mm. Rem. Mag. than any other caliber. People get to pushing smaller, less well constructed bullets, beyond their limits.

.270, 30-06, 30-30 state-wide. What is most popular in a particular region is dependent on terrain, cover, and type of animals, and will vary from region to region.
