Just for fun, what do you think is the most used caliber these days for deer -- I'm talking in Texas only.

I think 40 years ago it may have been the .30-30 or maybe the .30-06. I don't think so any longer but I'll hold off on saying what I think it is.

In modern times, for Texas, I'll bet its the .270

Got to be the 270, followed closely by the venerable Ought 6.

There are a lot of 270s, but im gonna go with 243 (popular)

I am going with the 243, followed by the 270, followed by the 30-06. I don't own any of them, nor would if given the chance, but I think they are the three most popular, however a lot of folks, and I don't agree with their use, are going with the 22-250. If they work with in the limits of the cartridge and take head and neck shots only, they are quite effective. JMO.

I will go with the 243, then the -06. Though my 270 is hard to beat, aint nothing that has come out yet that will kill a whitetail any better!

I think it is the 270, 30-06, 3030 and 308 in that order. At least it is by ammo sales!

The .270 WCF was my guess. The .243 WCF doesn't seem as popular as it was, say, 20 years ago.

Nice to have some confirmation from someone behind a gun counter! I've gotta say I'm surprised the .30-30 is still up there. I also run into quite a few guys using the .300 WM.

Modern times, .270. Before that, .243. Almost everyone I know hunts deer with a .270; the ones that don't, shoot a .243.

I would vote for the 243 but having said that I would not take for my 264 mag.

I think it depends on the area of Texas you are hunting.
Panhandle, west, south the larger calibers are common, 270,30-06,7mag,300 due to long shots and big animals
Hill country 223,243, and larger the shots are closer and animals are smaller
East Texas--22 long rifle and a logging road

That's a good point. Probably most of the .30-30 use is in East Texas.

I think it would be 30-06, .270, 30-30, then .308...in that order. Can't believe folks outside of east Texas still use a dirty terdy but they do...

I'll go with the .270. I had one but gave it to my son when he turned 14 so I started shooting a 7 mag the my dad passed down to me. I loved my .270 though. I shot alot of deer with that gun. But I will say one thing about the 7 mag...I have never had a deer run for more than ten yards after being shot with that gun. It really drops them in their tracks.

30-06, .243

I THINK 30/06 AND THEN 270 IT SEEMS TO BE THE TWO MOST POPULAR CALIBERS THAT GUNS AT WALL-MART COME IN AND I THINK THAT IS WHERE MOST PEOPLE GET THEIR FIRST GUN.

I'd have to say the 270. A 270 has been my primary whitetail gun since 1978. I've killed deer with lots of other calibers though. This year I plan on using the 280 rem. Pro Hunter that I got recently. I really like the feel of the gun and have wanted a 280 for a long time.

I have to say I am surprised. I know this is not the most popular round, but no one mentioned using it. I am talking about the 25-06. I bought one about five years ago and haven't shot my .243 since. I really like this round and may never go back.
