I had to add my initials to it to keep it from walking off! My kids and grandkids tend to have sticky fingers, so this is my second one and I'm hoping it will stay around for a while.

Perfect for a pelvis. I hate to see people baton a good knife though one.

So true! And I think that is what makes these little hatchets so popular with my thieving relatives! :-)

I've never understood the need to split a pelvis though.

I hear you, there is more than one way to skin a cat(deer). I split it, with a zip saw. The same saw I cut through the sternum. T handle, total length about 4", blunt on one end as to not puncture anything...........

The hatchet is cool, million and one uses.

An unethical shot is one you take, that you know you shouldn't.

I split it and pull everything up and out of the bottom.

Split it, open the back lags, stand on those, and lift up holding the deer's tail.

Grab the esophagus and trachea and cut those loose. Pull, cut the heart ligaments, diaphragm, and the couple of connections holding the guts in. All of it comes out the channel in the pelvis you made, as one unit.

I was taught by a man that's probably field dressed, skinned and quartered 1000 whitetail. He's 30 years older than me, and he's still faster at it than I am. But, I do it his way. Because it works.

This is the correct way to gut a deer.
