I never understood why the automotive industry never went all in on diesel engines. Reading this article it makes even less sense. https://www.cummins.com/news/2024/02/27/clessie-cummins-exploration-diesels-potential-passenger-carsIn 1935, with no diesel-powered passenger cars in production at the time, Cummins Inc. briefly collaborated with Auburn Automobile Company to install a prototype Cummins Model A 6-cylinder diesel in a 1935 Auburn. Using an aluminum block and head for a much lighter engine than typical cast-iron diesel engines, the innovative new engine provided fuel efficiency by getting better mileage using less expensive fuel: diesel compared to a gasoline counterpart, with diesel being less than half the price of gasoline.

If they hadn’t went low sulfur, with todays technology I don’t know how many gas engines would be out there.

The only thing wrong with diesel engines is the EPA. Which is why the 1981 John Deere 4440 tractor I bought in 2023, with 4200 hours on it, cost what it would have cost new in 1981. It does not have any EPA on it.

The EPA didn't come around until 1970 something, the industry had a great opportunity to adopt diesel before that. Beats me.

I add Clear Diesel to the nurse tank, when I fill that up. A trusted local mechanic told me thats all I need to do.

I was in the fuel/lube/propane business for 26 years. The modern day diesel fuels have a lubricity problem, and often times the refinery/terminal will add a lubricity additive to the fuel after refining. States have varying cetane requirements as well, but they can vary from batch to batch. I highly recommend a periodic diesel fuel additive like Hot Shots Everyday, every few tankfuls.

“Clear diesel” is an anti algae supplement, not sure it has lubricant additives, but I use it in all my storage for tractors and irrigation engine tanks. As far as supplement ours is or told that it is delivered with lube additive

Probably a combination of performance and government BS.

Government sure fixed that problem of diesel being cheaper than gas at the pump.

I love my 1/2 ton diesel. If it would be a pre-emission pre-electric everything diesel I’d really love it.

Diesel was also cheaper before the EPA decided to make diesel elimination its mission. Whether by reformulation of the product or messing with the equipment they are regulating it out of existence.

Fuel milege?? If you do the math by adding the extra cost of the diesel motor along with the extra cost of the diesel fuel it will take 10 years just to break even. Going by driving 15,000 a year.
Waiting 10 years to break even is a loss. The democrat logic spend $100 to save a dollar

For me i drive 50,000 per year so the payback is about 3 years plus i typically put about 400k on them before i dump them. Think it was one of my high school teachers a long time ago who said simple payback needs to be 3 years or less or not worth it once inflation, interest rates, maintenance plus a bunch of other factors are accounted for. Also i burn oil because i can as an FU to all the green Nazis - even if it costs me.

2011 Ram 3500 , 1976 Ford 9600, and a 2005ish Branson on the farm. As much as I would love a new tractor, I keep hearing so many bad things about them and the way maintenance works with all the new control systems that i probably won't ever buy a brand new one.
John Deere makes more money selling parts and labor than it does in the machines themselves right now.
