Been hunting deer since I was 16 and still hunt them, just not as hard as I have aged. Also squirrel hunt along with doves and hogs. I also fish in between hunting seasons, I love the winter crappie bite on Lake O the Pines.
Chased this one all last year, really looking forward to seeing him this year. [Linked Image]

Have not hunted in two years since my father in law sold his land and me having two major operations. Looking at least dove hunting this year.

Now, why would you go and put that thought in some self-righteous person's head? My answer is "Both." lizard I have been known to dispatch an axis from my front porch, in gym shorts (commando if it's hot enough) and flip-flops. I do have to set my cigar and martini down though. Okay, okay, one time I kept the cigar between my fingers.

I don’t deer hunt anymore either, I sit and watch a feeder. When something comes in to eat I then murder it. They all eat the same.

Yes, but not as much as I used to, or want to.

Yes, but I've only mainly hunted waterfowl and doves. Tried deer hunting a couple of seasons in my early teens (late 90s) but with no success. Went turkey hunting last year on a tpwd draw hunt but didn't shoot one. This year I'm branching out and gonna try to hunt deer, hogs, javelina and exotic on the tpwd draws.

I voted yes even though I haven't hunted in several years due to a serious stroke in June 2000. I'm not recovered enough and have bouts of vertigo. Working on it though and plan to get back at it.

Yeah no kidding. Pretty dumb question.

I've been hunting every year since 1971 and don't plan to stop.

This statement below is what generated the question and poll.

Interesting that you believe only half of the THF members actually hunt. I wonder how widespread that thought is across the THF?

Lets put it in the context of "hunt in any appreciable amount".

Look at the comments to the thread.....many on here admitted they haven't hunted in recent years but they still will poll themselves as hunters. The majority of the people who posted about the questions will say " well hey there, I'm a hunter and have been since 1957". Those are not the people I'm referring to.

I would venture a guestimate, that 50% of the members of on the THF hunt 1-3x's a year or less.

If the poll was about fishing, I could claim I'm a fisherman though the truth is it's been about 10 years since I've fished in any appreciable amount. I'm a 1-3x's a year guy at best, and that fishing is extremely casual. When people ask me if I'm a fisherman, my response is "no, not really", even though I went fishing two weeks ago.

Now if you ask me if I'm a duck hunter, I will say "hell yeah I'm a duck hunter" even though I didn't go at all last year and only twice the year before that. But the truth is I do it very sporadically even though I love to duck hunt.

I wasn't sure "why" the poll, at first, because I hadn't seen the prompting statement. originally, I thought during the summer, so yes, hunting hogs when they give us a chance and yes, in season when its open.

Been hunting every year since 1969 and never missed an opening moring of general deer season even did it 11 days after open heart 5 by pass surgery. Dad carried me along starting at age 4 and would tie me off up a tree stand usually 2x4 and a pallet with boad steps. Good older friend from Vietnam as a sniper got me in to some longer shooting in jr high and then into compound bow hunting and tournaments. Live for Sept 1 opening dove season to kick off every new TX game law season, actively bow hunt and some rifle sitting and watching feeders. Don't hunt near as much as used to but still get in field in fall about 45 days not including all year long hog hunting. Have hunted many years simoultaneous on leases in TX, OK, LA and Ark jumping around on the staggered seasons. Loved lease in the Trans Pecos for mule deerr, black buck, elk and white tail until it sold. Made my first trip to Africa for 2 weeks earlier this year and planning return. I do still enjoy deer lease work and now do a lot more still stalk hunting with wind and trying to get in close and hunting in ground blinds. I take way more photos now than actual shots at deer as I ain't that mad at them anymore but do fill freezers with management. LOL, my wife tells her fiends if it Flys, Swims or 4 legged walks, I'm in.

My grown son is my best hunting buddy when he can but he too has not missed a year since about 2 years old tagging with me. My Dad is 83 and still gets out around his house to deer hunt a couple times a year.

Hunting is one of if not the main reason I have no desilre to move from Texas. Born and raised and have experienced every diverse region of our great state. But I do enjoy hunting other species and places. South Dakota wild pheasant, duck, geese:, Argentina dove/pardee, parakeet, pigeon; coastal ducks, wading reds, specks on TX and La coasts and some great time out of The Rod and Gun club in Everglade city chasing trophy snook.

59 and will continue to go hunting till my last breath and hoping my son will carry me when that because necessary (I know he will)

Mostly Porkers for now in the off season. WT’s for the most part. I won’t pay for hunts. Squirrels when I can.

I’m not grasping at anything. I stand by my post that approx. 50% of the people on the THF do not currently hunt in any appreciable amount. Its like than on many forums.

I used the example to show how a person will poll themselves one way or the other even though their actions will show differently.

I don't think a poll would answer the real question, which was TXtrophy's claim that 1/2 of those on this forum don't hunt. Who would admit to that, other than older hunters that have hung it up due to age and or health issues? I think he's referring to those that hunt like some that "go" to the gym but don't work out. I used to hunt with a group, 1/2 of the guys never left camp. But ask them, they went "hunting".

So if someone only hunts one to three times every season does not fit the definition of "currently hunt". What is the magic number? How many trips or how many days of hunting makes one a hunter? Or fisher, or golfer, or a kayaker? Does 10 one day trips a year make one more of a hunter than someone who only makes one 10 day trip? If one makes one long hunting trip a year every year are they less of a hunter than someone who makes several trips in one year, but due to work, family, health, etc. has to skip a year or years. Would they only be considered a hunter during the years they hunted or are they not true hunters? Some people only Dove hunt one or three times a year as more of a social or company outing, but do shoot and eat birds while there. Are they not hunters because the main reason they go is mostly social? Some persons have all their own gear, do their own research and scouting, processes their own game, never uses a guide, but can only make one trip per year due to family commitments or company vacation time. Yet there are also some who can only use a guide, have every aspect of the hunt outfitted, only goes on fully outfitted hunts several times a season, but knows nothing about the game they are hunting beyond pulling the trigger. Is the DIY person then not a true hunter because they only hunt opening week every year? Or is the outfitted person who goes on guided hunts often, the only true hunter in this example. IMHO there is no magic number. They all fit the definition of "a person who hunts game or other wild animals for food or in sport".
