Whatever's handy. Usually .44 mag, .308, or a Muzzy Trocar.

If spot and stalk, it's my .300 BO, shooting a 125 GR SST bullet 2230 MV FPS. If I'm going to a set up, where I know I can lay prone or a stand, it's my .308 shooting a 165 GR. SST bullet, 2804 MV FPS. Center of the neck, down and at an angle back from the ear about 4-5". I haven't had a hog not drop like a sack of feed in a very long time.
An unethical shot is one you take, that you know you shouldn't.

My typical round 7.62x39 (cheapest steel case non-fmj I can find) from an AR platform but we use different stuff too like Grendel, 308, 300bo. Shot placement is important on the first shot, but once they start running, placement is pretty much out the window for follow up shots on multiple targets.

Ive been kicking around a 762 AR I have heard you are prone to breaking extractors shooting steel cased ammo Have you had this happen, or anybody for that matter? It has slowed me down on my purchase Id like to hear from those who run one

No extractor problems here. Only issue I’ve ever had were light strikes. I’ve upgraded to enhanced firing pins and no more problems. I’ve also converted from direct gas impingement to piston operated. Way cleaner.

I just love my Airforce Texan .308 using a 143 grain Hollowpoints. It is suppressed and just under sub-sonic velocity at 1025 FPS. Heart and ear shots are my favorite. Most my kills are between 115 and 128 yards.

They make ammo specifically for hunting for a reason!

The shot placement discussion makes me nuts. Only an idiot wouldn't understand that where the round impacts is important. But this is where the problem begins, isn't it? Over the past several years, I have guided hunts for several outfitters and a good many charities (military, church, etc.). Several hundred "hunters" over that period. Those numbers have included all kinds of folks from newbies to military. By and large, a huge percentage of folks can't place a round where it needs to be....many of them, not even close. I can't tell you how many times I have worked to get "hunters" within 40 yards and not a single hair touched on a single hog. That is frustrating. I remember a night with a large outfitter. He had 12 hunters out, together, at this point. Stupid, but I ain't runnin' the show. There was a good number of hogs across a fence, 50ish maybe. They are, give or take, around 50 yards out from the fence. Favorable wind. A gully in between us and the fence. I set back and watched. He managed to get this thundering herd down through the gulley and up to the fence without the hogs spooking. That's actually better than I thought it would go. They lined up along the fence, 12 of them. The firing commenced. Off the hogs go. 30 round mags emptying. Lead flying everywhere. Cease fire is called, guns on safe. Two hogs lay dead. This sort of shooting is way more the norm than most folks think. Shot placement can be discussed, but I am convinced it isn't on the radar for a high percentage of shooters. That comes from the experience of observing a large number of folks in the field over time.
On a positive note.... The best person I ever took out was a recently retired SEAL. This guy was amazing. It was for a university group that was raising money for a scholarship for their school at the university. His brother had won the auction for the hunt. I have taken a lot of military guys out and I hate to say, but I have generally been underwhelmed. This guy though... It wasn't just his shooting which was never miss. He definitely racked up body count. It was his ability to move through woods like no one else. Completely silent and fast! I will never forget that hunt. And if you had a camera to record You will notice that majority of missed shots hit low And the guys with Rambo ARs are the worst of the bunch

6.5 Grendel has been my go to for awhile. I have been looking at something else which is why I clicked on this thread. 6.8 seems very popular. I’ve also used a 12 gauge with 00 buckshot from about 15 yards which was fun as hell.

For years I’ve used a 260 and 120 gr BTs, but that was when the hogs were always traveling. I’d lung shoot ‘em. But now that I have a feeder in the pasture (150 yards) and deer season is over, I’ll be using the AR in 223. The hogs will be eating my corn and being relatively stationary. Ear or spine shots, using what the rifle is presently zeroed with - 63 gr Sierra SMP.
I have considered going to the 6.8 SPC and 110 gr Accubonds, but that’s a maybe later, when Accubonds are available.

All of my pig hunting consists of nite time w/ a thermal...sounders I use a 300 Hamr and single boars I prefer a 7-08 AR10.

My favorite is my 300 HAM'R, but tonight I went out to see if I could trim the raccoon herd so I took my .223 Wylde. I've got it topped with a Wraith, and used my hand loads of 69 grain Sierras. Right at dusk, momma pig and her 8 kids showed up to beat the crowd to the corn. I took her out at 116 yards with a Sierra in her right ear hole. Dropped like a rock; a few kicks; her kids were swirling about her like dry leaves in the fall wind storm, and none of them paused long enough for me to take one out of the orphanage it would be returning to tonight. ![[Linked Image]](https://texashuntingforum.com/forum/pics/userpics/2022/02/full-54774-336421-piggydown2.jpg)
