For the folks with experience, what barrel length, twist rate, velocity, etc. worked well for you? Any handloading info for those bullet weights would be helpful as well. I'm rebarreling a long action, so seating depth won't be an issue. Thanks for the help, fellas.

I have lots of experience with both bullets but not when loaded in that cartridge. When dealing with a .284 bore you get the best performance with a 1 in 9 twist, the heaviest bullet you can find, and load them to the max. Normally I shoot a 7mm Mag or 7mm STW if I am using a .284 bore.

Depending on what Critters you're shooting you should not hesitate to use the eld-m bullets. For game weighing under 250 lb the eld-m and A-max are ideal bullets.

If you want really cheap, really good, and very easy to load give the Hornady 162 grain SST a shot. Simply seat the bullet over a max charge to the cannelure depth and crimp it. It will shoot very well and chances are load development really won't get it shooting that much better.

I would commit to 2500 count, 175 gr ELD-X and make em run.

At 24" you might hit 2900 fps. H-4831 SC burn rate is probably where I'd start if I could find it.

Thanks for the info. I've read a few threads about it on other sites, and it seems that folks are having trouble getting the 175s to stabilize from a 1:9 barrel at 284 Win speeds. I'm a fan of Amax and SST, but I have a good supply of 7mm ELD-X, so I need to start there.

You're right on the money about 4831 SC. I loaded it with heavy bullets in my old 284 Win and it worked great. I have a bunch of RL16 now. It might be too fast to do what I'm trying to do. Dstroud has done it but I don't know which bullets he's tried or what kind of velocity he got.

Been shooting 175 eldx through a 7mm08 for a few years 1:8.5 twist has worked well only shot out to 400 yards but no stability issues at all. MV of 2605

Just curious...how does the standard 284 win compare to 280ai?

I think they are within a grain or two of case capacity and about 8% lower than a 7saum--- never had a 284win but have had a 280ai and currently a SAUM.

I think the real question is if the case geometry favors one or the other.


As far as for the OP- my 280ai was a factory 1-9 but I never ran anything over a 162. With my SAUM I'm currently running a cream puff 162 ELDM @ 2850 which is a low node for certain. I've considered going to a 175ELDX or even keeping the 162-M as my deer/light skinned load and running a 175gr Partition for Elk, etc
