First you throw an old Simmons ATEC on your new crapper Ruger rifle Then you throw together a load of Hornady bullets you got laying around, and a little bit of 3031 powder because that's what you could find. There will be no node chasing or ladder test, because getting powder is a pain in the [censored] Then you finish up by taking seven total shots sighting in, using the hood of your truck with a rolled up flannel for a bag, with a strong two shot under the thumb group to finish it up. Should be plenty good enough to go hunting when I get a chance in a couple of weeks. I bet the deer don't even notice that I didn't ladder test... Load data for those interested: 150 grain Hornady interlock with 41 grains of 3031 powder, Winchester primers and I don't even remember what kind of brass but it's the same head stamp. I decided on that because I thought I would like the outcome and I do. I'm by no means saying that is the optimum load, but I reckon it'll be fine

The only part I can’t believe is the Simmons scope. Come on, let’s not tempt fate. At least upgrade to a Barska.

This can't be possible! A $49.99 scope, no chamber measurements, no OGIVE measurements, no head space measurements, no trigger pull gauge involved, no scope to rifle leveling, no pound torque gauge involved and components just laying around on the bench. Don't tell the deer Thell be pissed to know they were shot dead with this kinda foolery. Just kidding, have fun!

The glass is surprisingly good and it hasn't fogged yet. I'm not saying you're going to shoot a square with it, just hoping it holds zero which it has so far

Need a pic of that chevy/GM your sitting in. The upholstery and cup holder bring back some fond memories for me!
I put together the money to buy my start in reloading at 12 or 13 years old. First several guns I loaded for were all nosler bullets, I would pick the accuracy load their data listed and run with it. They all shot better than factory ammo did for me. I put a lot more effort into making better ammo now, but in reality 100% of my hunting is doable with something similar.

Growing up, Simmons was all we used cuz we were poor. Never knew any better and shot lots of deer!

I have an old Simmons 44 mag I think is what they called it on a 223 my brother and I put money together to buy when I was a little kid. I was probably 9-10 years old my brother was a few years older, but after we scraped enough moeny together to buy the rem 700 there was little left for a scope so its where we landed. I will not brag about the scope, but its still on there about 20 years later in leupold rings and bases no less and still shoot just fine.

Just imagine a brown extended cab Chevy, 94 model, with a lot of mesquite pinstriping. Every time I think about a new truck I'll look at that pinstriping and go ,"maybe not". About 90% of what I do is on a ranch, so buying a new truck just to tear hell out of it doesn't make sense to me

I’m shocked that I opened a can of worms about Simmons. Apologies to their fans.

I have 2 friends and in our younger days 70's all they used were Simmons & Tasco scopes. I used to give them stuff about their choices but the darn things worked. I could never go there with their choices.

But I thought since I had the Simmons I would give it a try. I've had decent luck with them in the past, probably a higher success rate than vortex

How are you gonna be able to know exactly what hair follicle your bullet is gonna hit though?
The secret to a long life is to try not to shorten it.
