The "holds" do not line up with just everything. So, you have to shoot it, and find out. This is a .308 Win, 165 Nosler Accubond. (Rifle was canted, scope is not mounted canted) Gotta make a chart, so you know where the accurate holds are.

I see you are using the most excellent Blue Painters Tape. Every rifle I own has that tape and range info on the scope. Back when I had just one rifle, I didn’t need range reminders. Nowadays though…

Love the B&C on one of my 7-08's. It shoots 140 AB's very, very well at 2810fps. In order for the holds to match up to 300, 400, 450, and 500 I sighted it in at 215 yds. Works like a champ.

I love my B&C reticles. I just input all my data into the iStrelok software and print out a picture of my B&C reticle. It calculates what distance each horizontal line is. Print it out and use clear shipping tape to attach it to my stock. I don’t need the 200/300, etc. Last antelope I shot with rifle was ranged at 296. One of my horizontal lines was 289. Case closed. I can see why you need them for targets though.

When I had a Viper, I went to the vortex page. They have a calculator for their BDC reticles. Input the load data and it printed out the actual yardage the marks represented. I don't recall exactly but my first line below center came out to be like 189, what should have been the 300 yard hash was 270 and so on. I tested it, it was spot on. Ranged to the target and shot holding dead on from those ranges, it was so close I went with it. I put my longest shot on a white tail to date shooting that set up. I have since went to CDS on Leupold, but JG's point is no matter how you try to get there, test it.
A few weeks ago we were set up at the lease shooting out to 400. I have an 8" plate that hangs from a t post. Buddy was shooting an APR at distance for the first time. Impact on the 400 yard set up. We go to look at the plate and it's clean. I swear it moved. Damn, he hit the t post, low, there was the hole. So, using the BDC, he determined what the hold point should be, took another shot and it was all good. Besides, what else you got to do at the lease in the middle of the day?
An unethical shot is one you take, that you know you shouldn't.

That’s the way I’ve always done it. Have several Nikon BDC scopes. Used the Nikon app to calculate, then shoot at distance to fine tune. Worked pretty good on several Wyoming pronghorn.

It could not read a yard stick at 100 yards. I have tried to help several of the Joe Bubbas on my lease with BDC reticles. What has always drove me crazy is that you can’t look up the subtensions and actually see what the MOA holds are set at. Reading this and the wheels are turning in my head… I guess this is how you figure it out. Unless the scope is too crappy to resolve it. Lol

Lol You have to put the known sizes out there at known distances. Get in the scope, piece of paper nearby with a pencil. Draw pictures, take notes. A real pain in the di*k. Today, I took the same copy scope off a rifle. Set it aside and mounted one of my FFP Mil/Mil scopes to the rifle for fouling, zeroing, and load development at 300 yards. Just didn't want to waste powder, primers and bullets trying to make a "close enough scope" at 300 yards work.

I’ve usually, in past BDC discussions, defended their use. Still, the use is limited, and the user needs to understand those limitations. Real precision shooting at long distance isn’t where BDC shines.

Real precision shooting at long distance isn’t where BDC shines. It is for making fast holds for elevation to 300, maybe 400 yards. The same is done with Mil and MOA reticles. Except no one needs to draw pictures. And the holds are exact. The farthest distance I've made an elevation hold on an animal was a coyote at 500 yards. Up 3.0, slow squeeze, coyote fell over dead.

Longest BDC shots for me were 500 yards on a pig and 400 on a pig and a few coyotes. You serious long distance shooters would just be warming up at those distances.

And another one today. 7mm-08, 162 ELD-X. He wanted a 200 yard zero. Drawing pictures again. Oh, but one of th holds is correct.
