Batteries are improving, but slooowly. Tesla is just now starting to produce their second generation of battery tech. It is a noticeable improvement in design. I figure that about midway through generation 3, with a bunch of nuclear power plants added to the grid, it should be workable.
edit: Might even start to have an electric aircraft industry by then. There's a significant electric aircraft industry focused on RC hobbiest's. Batteries and power density are key. I see similarities in EV development similar to that of RC vehicles 20 years ago when brushless motors and NiMH & Lithium battery tech entered the RC industry and caused an explosion of revolutionary designs in fixed/rotary winged aircraft and other types of RC vehicles. When the power density of batteries reaches a certain threshold and air traffic & autonomous control tech matures sufficiently, quadcopter type air travel will gain momentum.

I will not get in an electric aircraft period. I can’t see how they could ever make a large airplane or cargo ship electric powered.

I think it will be something like 20 passenger Dallas to Houston type flights using smaller airports. Ten seats on each side. Everyone gets a window and aisle seat. Lower cost, less security hassle. I can see a market for it.

I don't see the need at this point My ? Would be why have they not made the vehicles self charging yet Couple alternators built into the wheels seems like a plan then no mileage limit and no need for prolonged plugging in It has always been said that energy cannot be created or destroyed. Energy is something that exists in this world, and there is an option for energy to be changed. It can transform from one type of energy to another, but it does not mean that it will go away. There are different things that energy will go through, but it will always be there. Albert Einstein Quotes For Electric car to work it will require a tremendous increase in our electric production, and distribution. 220 volts X 20 amp=4400 watts for at least 4 hours to get a full charge every night for a commuter car alone.

For commuters, why not go electric? A big challenge is for us who drive distances, and/or haul, so range is a big limitation. But the biggest problem is the time to charge - if it can't be accomplished in roughly the time it takes to fill a gas tank, that is a big problem.
Maybe we'll see a time where all over the road vehicles are either electric or diesel? That would satisfy the commuter and short trip group, but also provide for the longer trips and hauling needs.

Regarding cost of electricity, I have to wonder if this will wind up like Diesel fuel. It was cheap, so diesel vehicles sounded like a good idea. Only problem was that oil refineries are set up to make gasoline, and diesel production is much lower as a percentage of the initial barrel of crude oil. So when diesel demand rose sharply, price did too. Soooo, when electricity demand rises, will production be sufficient to meet demand. I don’t think it will, because electricity prices will have to rise before there is incentive to build more production.
Therefore, I suggest that what looks like logic when you say electricity and charging your vehicle is relatively cheap is actually logic from old data. Eventual price reality will, to some degree, will negatively impact the economics of electric vehicles.
And, looking back, that is exactly how it worked with diesel fuel and diesel cars. Oddly enough, I was a Chemical Engineer in an oil refinery before and during the big push to diesel, and I knew instantly that there was not enough diesel for a big change to diesel at anywhere near prices at that time. But I never one time heard anybody above my lowly pay grade say anything against the logic of switching significantly to diesel. No politician ever said it, which would have been against the political narrative at that time, and the upper level guys in refining likely saw it as potential for new refinery construction and related profit. So on we went. And it sure feels to me like the rush to EV will have a similar outcome, only this time a rise in the cost of electricity won’t impact your driving nearly as much as it will affect the cost of operating your home and/or business.
We are not doing this change due to carefully considered economics. We are doing this for some fuzzy unproven logic of climate change and for the PC culture. Supposedly, fossil fuels are a bad thing, whereas electricity is a good thing. But let’s not too closely examine where electricity comes from.
No, I don’t have any tinfoil on my head.

But if you're charging it every night, you're likely needing a small partial charge, not a large one. Part of that is also offset by fewer gas pumps pumping, fewer convenience stores running lights/signs, fewer pumpjacks drawing on the grid to pump oil, etc.

It won't make any sense till we can build nuke power plants,

Someone referenced the infrastructure that supports gas and diesel manufacturing. The supply line to get it from the refinery to the gas pump is significant, in cap-ex and op-ex. Whereas power grids are ubiquitous.
fwiw, A couple years I saw some USPO patents granted to the US Naval research arm that were granted for a functional cold fusion reactor the size of a two car garage. That would be a game changer. Imagine AYCE electricity.
One concern is gasoline and desel is heavily taxed by both the state and feds. It comprises a significant revenue stream, I wonder how that revenue could be replaced.

Have bought TSLA @ $442 $460 $540 $592 $626 TSLA has killed it for me, its been awesome. As far as the car, at first I had no interest at all. Then I drove Model S and it completely changed my mind. I'm certainly think about getting one when my current daily commuter bites the dust.

Seems like some think the electric vehicles are short on power, i dont believe that is the case at all, they are actually make very good power. I think the technology for batteries and fast charging is what holds them back. When that is figured out I would consider one, but not till then.

A friend of mine sold his electric car last winter because on cold days he could barely make it to work. I'm out, I put 50k a year on a truck. Everything from duck swamps to mountains and of course highway. Electric vehicle is not for me.

I would say electric vehicles aren't for you yet. Look at where cordless tools have come from and gone in the past 20 years.

I laugh out loud at the people who are all aboard the "buy electric, save the earth" mentality.
Until nuclear power becomes the norm - you're still charging that car with fossil fuels. Those cars were made with fossil fuels. Got plastic? Fossil fuel. Batteries = toxic waste...they ain't running the mining equipment off electric motors either. In fact a lot of lithium and cobalt mining areas are environmentally sensitive places to begin with.
I'm all for the novelty of it and if it works for you - cool - but saying it's to save the environment is whimsical nonsense.
