I am sure this has been covered. About how much mass will a buck lose when it scraps off its velvet?

Probably about one percent. So if the buck has 30" of mass hard maybe 33" in velvet.

I use 2% to 3% off of the final score. It really depends on the buck. Mass is where they loose the most since you get 8 measurements. I found they loose from 1/8" to 1/2" off each mass measurement. This comes from scoring pen raised bucks before and after velvet sheds. What is also not factored in will be when you kill the deer. Early season they will have a bit more mass than after rut. They will continually rub trees and that shrink the mass measurement at those locations that they rub with. Some bucks are more aggressive at rubbing or sign posting than others. Probably about one percent. So if the buck has 30" of mass hard maybe 33" in velvet. 3" is 10% off of your example not 1%.

Our experience is 1-2% in mass. Something we have noticed in our pictures is that the time right after they have shed the horns look smaller than they do few weeks later. Not sure if that has to do with the horns taking a little time to fully harden After shedding velvet.

Beautiful beautiful deer tlk. Is that beam turned down or is that a drop? HUD I’m not that smart either—I never tried to figure it out, I just guesstimate some loss then wait for hard antler.

Just not sure how anyone would be smart enuff to really know. From people with deer pens that dart bucks in Sept to sell or move in as a breeder. You dart them in early Sept in velvet and then when you pick up the sheds your remeasure them again. That is where my 2%-3% off the total score comes from. It was not a guess but actual numbers. Every deer is different though. A lot depends on the webbing on the beams/points and how close the points are together.

The hunter who took him was having him officially scored and I have not seen the sheet yet. I will get it from him and try to post
