We have airline points with our credit card so if we have the points we use them if it's 8 hours or more. NOLA is the only exception we fly there as prices are super cheap, hell we have even day tripped there before via SW.

Only time we drive when it's more than 8 hours is our trips to Red River and Big Bend just because of the lack of nearby commercial airports.

We drive if time is not a factor and we want to see the sights along the way.

My wife were talking just last night about how over 30 years of flying we have had almost no issues with delays, hassles, cancelled flights, time on the tarmac, etc. that others talk about constantly. That probably takes in 75-100 round trips over that span. I guess we have just been extremely lucky.

I was too. NEVER had a single issue until two years ago. My son was graduating in North Carolina and they sent us through Denver and Chicago after messing up our non-stop to Raleigh.
Had to spend the night in Chicago........luggage already in Raleigh. Didn't even have a toothbrush.

We did manage to get there in time to see the graduation but it was touch and go for awhile.

I guess we were due for the big hit.

After that horrible return trip from Ireland, we cancelled our November trip to Paris and London. I hate flying anymore, and I think it hates me back. When the memory of that awful trip fades, maybe we’ll fly again. Probably...maybe...

I drive. Like has been said already, If I can't drive there I ain't going. I enjoy the flying but I HATE putting up with airports. My last flying experience was in 2011, coming back from Africa hunting trip, & as bad as I want to go back to Africa, it ain't gonna happen. We normally will spend 14-15 hrs on the road and cover 900 to 1100 miles with the two of us sharing the behind the wheel time.

I'm faced with this decision right now.

My wife's grandfather passed away yesterday. He lived in Albuquerque and will be buried in Santa Fe at the National Cemetery on July 10th. We looked at flights and the best price and time we could find for 4 of us was $1640 and the trip would take 7-8 hrs door to door each way. I know I can drive it in 12-12.5 hrs for about $250 in gas round trip. Add a $90 hotel stay to break it up one direction and we are still saving $1300 not including car rental when we get there.

The kicker is 10 days later we are going on our summer trip to Durango which takes us through Alb. again.

I certainly don't mind either of the drives and would've done them back to back in order to be at this great man's funeral.
