I’m almost certain Myth Busters did a segment on flying vs. driving. If my memory serves me correctly, any flight less than 300 miles driving was faster than flying. That sounds right. I drive dfw to midland and wife flew. All things considered, i arrived at the same time. 316 miles

I’m almost certain Myth Busters did a segment on flying vs. driving. If my memory serves me correctly, any flight less than 300 miles driving was faster than flying. Usually, except New Orleans. Hour to the airport, Hour at the airport, 45 minute flight. 10 minutes in NO airport and gone. 5.5 hour drive. Harlingen is like that too. I guess a lot has to do with which security clearances you have which will determine how early you need to get to the airport. I arrive at the airport 30 minutes before boarding. Of course, any delays and the math and aggravation certainly favor driving.

Im not a big fan of flying.
If its moderately close im driving. I want to go to the keys. Told the wife if she could get me to the Louisiana line I could get her the rest of the way but im not sure when we will go. Originally wanted to go just the two of us, but the kids are getting bigger and considering waiting till they are big enough. Reasoning for wanting to drive is wanting to take the boat.

The older I get, the more I dislike driving. I'll fly for anything over 400 miles unless there's dogs and shotguns involved.

I once flew from Houston to Corpus for a bachelor party, that 30 minute flight on Sunday was amazing. The 4 hour drive alone on a Sunday being "tired" would have made for a horrible day. When I landed that morning my wife decided I should meet them at the zoo and walk off the weekend.

I'm not a big fan of flying. Not the actual flying part, but the overall airport experience. I didn't have much choice with my trips to Alaska, but I told my wife on every trip as soon as our son is back in the lower 48 we're driving to see him. I would much rather plan my trip as I want, pack what I want, leave when I want, and take my choice of routes. If we decide at the last minute to change any of our plans, no big deal. Add to that the ability to easily take my choice of fishing/hunting equipment and the ability to carry my pistol on the trip and it's a no brainer for me. I'll take driving unless I just can't for some reason.

We take a lot of golf trips. If it is AZ. we fly. If we go east, it is in the truck. We both like road trips, you can take whatever you want, and it's your own pace.
The older I get, the bigger aversion to the hassle of airports, planes crowded with rude people, a lot of whom don't smell very good, and a complete lack of service.
The add on charges really bug me. I would feel better about it if the airlines just gave me a price, and everything is included.
The only other thing I'll do is if I am going to Austin or Houston...Vonlane bus. Love that.

Over an 8 hour drive, I try to fly. A lot of deciding factors, but I'll take flying over driving anytime I can. The convenience and time savings is well worth it

He has yet to get on a flight that wasn't delayed by at least a couple hours. Add to that the headache of the airport.... and I don't know. Sure flying can save a lot of time but its not guaranteed.

Same goes for road construction and wrecks, as long as you do your home work for construction and of course wrecks are a different story.

We fly if it’s a “point A to point B” time-saver and time is important.
We drive if time is not a factor and we want to see the sights along the way.
My wife were talking just last night about how over 30 years of flying we have had almost no issues with delays, hassles, cancelled flights, time on the tarmac, etc. that others talk about constantly. That probably takes in 75-100 round trips over that span. I guess we have just been extremely lucky.
I learned long ago you can't reason someone out of something they don't reason themselves into.

1) Can I get a direct flight there? This isn't a deal breaker for flying, but I hate dealing with changing planes and layovers. If I'm going somewhere, I want to get there. 2) How many airline points do I have? 3) What am I going for, and how long will I be there? 4) Distance to destination. I will typically drive anywhere if staying in the state. I have a lake house that cuts the drive to Austin in half-ish, and is a good place to stop and break up the drive if going to the coast.

Barring time constraints or lack of bridges I prefer to drive. Usually find something interesting along the way.
Like others say airports are not in my comfort zone. And any time I’ve done my simple math we come out ahead as long as there are 3 of us traveling.

Family of 4 here with kids ages 5 & 8 and we drive most places if we can get there in a 2 day trip of 6-8 hrs each day, will sometimes drive 12-14 hrs in a day if necessary. It's tough to get direct flights from Austin so that adds to the time and cost. Wife has family in Albuquerque and it would cost us $1500+ to fly and take about 8 hrs total travel time with a short layover. I'm willing to drive to save $1,000 and spend 4 more hours in the truck, plus I have my truck and control of what happens.
We drove to Destin, FL when the youngest was 1, it also saved us $1,000+ and we got to see some cool things on the way, like a battleship in Mobile, AL. (can't remember the name of it). Next month we are driving to Albq then on to Durango, CO for a week long trip.
We took the kids to Cabo last summer and of course flew there and will fly when we go to Disney or to take them to NYC or Wash. DC.

I will say I'm by myself. If it's two people, flying won't be worth it typically. I can go about anywhere in the us for $400 round trip, so yeah, a ten hour drive with 2 people will be a lot cheaper than you both flying.

I’m a big boy (6’5” 300 bills), so I do fit in coach seats very well. To me the extra drive time is worth it vs sitting on a plane. When I walk on the plane people immediately start praying that I’m not sitting next to them.
