Probably a rat snake, or water snake. Too slender for a cottonmouth When in doubt, kill it.

Western Rat Snake (Pantherophis obsoletus) one of the most beneficial snakes we have in Texas. Glad you did not kill it, so many people kill good snakes because of ignorance.

Western rat snake. Keep it away from the chicken coop! ^^^^^ This. We are covered up with them in Deep East Texas. Pattern and color (darkness) varies widely.

Parts of far Eastern Louisiana...for sure. But who knows. Rat snakes vary widely in pattern and coloration.

Probably a rat snake, or water snake. Too slender for a cottonmouth When in doubt, stand still until it moves on or slowly move away. FIFY

Or... because they are in your chicken coop eating eggs freaking your wife out! In Deep East Texas (where I live) you will never hear it called a 'rat snake'....ALWAYS a 'chicken snake' (Colloquially)....just for the reason you cite.
