Probably a rat snake, or water snake. Too slender for a cottonmouth
When in doubt, kill it.

It wasn't venomous, I know that for sure, so no point in killing it.

I believe its a rat snake....circles down the center of the back with lines??? down the sides is throwing me. I looked on line...closest I could find was a grey rat snake. I'll grab my snake book tomorrow...

Western Rat Snake (Pantherophis obsoletus) one of the most beneficial snakes we have in Texas. Glad you did not kill it, so many people kill good snakes because of ignorance.

^^^^^ This. We are covered up with them in Deep East Texas. Pattern and color (darkness) varies widely.

I didn't think the 'gray' made into Texas (if that is where the photo was taken)?

Parts of far Eastern Louisiana...for sure. But who knows.

Rat snakes vary widely in pattern and coloration.

When in doubt, stand still until it moves on or slowly move away.

In Deep East Texas (where I live) you will never hear it called a 'rat snake'....ALWAYS a 'chicken snake' (Colloquially)....just for the reason you cite.
