I"m trying to figure out if buying a Waygu bull for my Angus Heifers would be a good investment? Does anyone have experience to share? Thanks,

I am really looking at will the investment pay off? I am selling bulls and replacing with one bull. I'm thinking I would buy one bull and additional heifers. Total of 16-20 cattle. So if anyone has experience with a smaller herd and adding Waygu Bull is worth the investment let me know. Thanks,

My FIL runs about 100 head of black cows and has for years and years
I do know he has considered scaling back and going all Wagyu for last year or two.
I doubt he ever does though, just knowing him
That’s my extent of cattle knowledge

Seems like Bobo runs cattle, you may message him. He may know I’m down to just running winter wheat/barely feeder yearling now, I’m out of cow calf hopefully forever, or until I hit my head again. While I throughly enjoy speciality meats, I’m scared to death of specialty death loss. Market is getting really big for it but from my understanding the market is competitive but can be very profitable. At this time we’ll over my head. I would think it would be a great retained ownership investment if you can carry through.

I passed, but is that true? Is it really that tender?

I don’t know if you can get true Kobe beef, here. There’s a lot of of qualifications it must meet. But I’m guessing that’s what they had, being from Japan. Wagyu is the breed, but there’s so much more to the process that makes Kobe beef as tender as it is.

They are good for a heifer bull because they usually throw small calves but unless you have a steady buyer for the meat I think you’re better off sticking with the angus.

A Brangus bull would be best to run with Angus, or a Brahma.

Admittedly I know little if anything about the cattle market or industry but know some who are pretty involved in it. It seems like they all recommend something different.

Waygu has different grades, Infact a much better grading scale then ours. You want the A5, Allen Brothers is a good source. You will be hard pressed to find an A5 rating on grass feed -grass finished, if you do I’d be very hesitant on the actual rating or even being authentic

I will confirm that it is, NP. I was looking at a processing plant and got some wagyu ribeyes and filets while there. I put them to the 'Pepsi Taste Challenge' against freshly custom butchered angus ribeye and filets. It is true that the friction of a finger against the meat will liquefy the surface fats quicker and it felt like they would melt away compared to the angus. I cooked them over mesquite and the angus would not hold a candle to the wagyu; flavor was better and they were as near to fork tender as redmeat can get. At $40-50 per pound, it will have to be a very special occasion when I eat another wagyu steak once these are gone.

As far as I understand, the completely stress free method raising wagyu doesn't actually do much if anything for the meat in practice. It comes down to genetics and finishing them on grain to fatten them up. They have good genes for marbling, you time it right with the finishing and the slaughter and you get the buttery marbled beef that they are known for. The stress free method is mostly a marketing gimmick, it's a genetically uperior breed.
