Big fan of 7mm with a good bullet. Never had to track a deer or animal further than a few yards if the shot was where it needed to be. Brought up being a meat hunter I was taught a double lung shot or a head shot was the only one to take (right or wrong). A shoulder shot would get me a good chewing out as it wasted too much meat. The one that ran off on me was a double lung and I have never had one run off with either the 25-06, 30-06, .308 or .243 like I did with the 7MM. Again it may have just been the bullet was not the best as this was over 30 years ago and there were some of that era that did not expand well.

6.5 creedmore would be my nomination Why? Because it’s become wildly popular? Every deer I’ve shot with mine has fallen right over without taking a step. You probably also think sitting and watching a corn feeder is really hunting. why even feed the troll. freaking thing blows big nasty holes in animals. No different than a swede, the difference is i can actually find a gun I like in the .264 and actually find ammo, this is why its done so well. remington dropped the ball with the 260 just like they did with the 6mm

Our lease has had two different tracking dog owners come out. Both said that they track more deer from 7mm mags and 300mags than any other caliber.
So many deer are lost with a 7 mag, IDK why but I've seen it over and over. I can assure you with 100% certainty it's not the cartridge, it's the shooters. I shot one for several years with Nosler Partitions and every deer I shot except one dropped in their tracks (all heart/lung shots). The one that didn't drop immediately didn't go very far. As others have said, it's the shooters flinching and not putting the bullet where it needs to go.

Being a new hunter, I am hoping my new .270 isnt a bad caliber haha I think that if they had stopped developing new cartridges after the .270, about the same number of deer would have still been dropped. You won't hear too many folks knocking the .270.

When I was shopping, they were trying pretty hard to get me to get the creedmore. When I told them I wanted a .270 or .308 for my first deer/pig rifle, they kept pushing for it and then I said I wanted something more traditional

Don't you know these days the 270 has tremendous recoil, is an unwieldy long action, and has pure chit bullets available when it comes to BC? Its a wonder the bullet even make it to the paper at 100 yards much less kill game.

Let’s see the old 270 has been killing deer for over 90 years now and all these new 6.5’s are so much better! Also, the 30-06 is over 100 years old, wow why is anyone still using these archaic calibers? I guess all of us old timers need to go back to ammo school!

Several of these 6.5s come close to what can be done with the 6.5X55 which was a teenager when the 30-06 was new.

When it comes down to it everyone just likes having multiple guns of different calibers. Heck I bought a Browning in 6.5 CM late last year and now I'm playing around with two 40+ year old Remington 700's in 270 and 30.06 I figure they're all about equal within the 300 yard range

no accuracy and no stopping power...you would be better off throwing the gun at them and hoping it knocks them out

Agree with Kmon on the Swede. It has taken a lot of moose in Scandanavia. Not a lot that it won't do.

The worst caliber is the one you can't shoot well. Yep but if you practice enough with any rifle you should be able to shoot it well if not then its time to trade or sell it. In my teens my brother hunted with a big box store (FED MART) surplus rifle from WW2 that you could purchase out of a barrel in the sporting goods dept and take your pick for around $13.00, and that's no joke. He got a 6.5 Japanese that was pretty rough, and no body could get that thing to hit anything. You could have been inside a barn and shoot it and you wouldn't hit the walls. Just when he thought he had it sighted in, there would be a flyer that would miss by feet not inches. He ended up hunting from a tree and dropping it on the deer!........Only part of story not true! I think our dad ended up pawning it as it disappeared.

Those I shot were close, real close!
They make ammo specifically for hunting for a reason!

If I would’ve hit something other than a leg, he’s going nowhere with 167 VLDs. Heck I shot my spike with a bulk federal round, and he didn’t move his feet, just collapsed. Like most of the guys said, it’s where you put the shot, not what your shooting. Unless it’s a 6.5 hehehe

I miss the days when people just killed deer and had a good time together around the camp fire. When was that? I'm an old man now, and I can remember my dad and his buddies having some serious discussions about calibers, poker, politics, and redheaded women. That was usually at an east Texas deer camp. There weren't a whole lot of deer around then so they really didn't have much else to do. There were plenty of deer.Just took a pack of good hounds to get them out of the thicket. lol
