Let's say you are going on a big game hunt and you want to be able to shoot out to 500 yards. What is the minimum you should spend?

$599+ for a hunt I知 financially invested in. For me that would be VX-5HD 2-10 with cds. Minimum.
Now if I just happened to see a pig at 500 with my FX-2 4x I would hail marry it in there. Or from now on I will call it the NP shot for short.
Edit: I do like my Marlins with peep sights and my fixed FX scopes but if I知 traveling and spending money I want my only limitations to be my abilities. No excuses.

For a hunting scope with a good reticle for medium/long-ish range shooting, it's pretty hard to beat. 9x is fine for hunting size targets at medium distance. I'd feel a little handicapped past 500 yards. But for most reasonable hunting distances, it's more than adequate.

$700 plus
If I was dropping the loot on a safari once in a lifetime hunt I would buy a NF nxs at minimum with some premium rings

I知 in line with most on this thread so far. I absolutely would not have reservations about using my SWFA 3-9 HD when a hunt starts getting expensive.

I paid $699 for my VX5-HD, 3-15x 44, CDS-ZL2. From Optics Planet, they threw in a $100 gift card, good for anything on their site. Bought a Harris Bipod with it. For 500 yards, I need 15x.
An unethical shot is one you take, that you know you shouldn't.

I have a fixed 6 SS on my 308 and the targets look plenty big and easily hittable over 500 yards. A 9x scope would be even better.
Haha yea I polished that thing for hours.

Burris MTAC 4.5-14 with the Mil-Dot reticle can be had around $300. YEs, it's SFP and you can't spin the turrets but it will easily get you to 500 yards with a cartridge like the Creedmoor. Decent glass, good brand, warranty if you need it.

Well, about six years ago only $299. Remember, Zeiss offered the 3-9X40 Conquest MC with the Duplex reticle and it was the ultimate hunting scope for years and years.
Now days...I would have to say the best option would be a fight between the Trijicon 3-9x40 Accupoint and SWFA SS 3-9X42

Agreed with everyone saying SWFA SS will get the job done, with the following caveats: - Get the cheap set of shims so you can have a zero stop. And he doesn't make them for every single model of SS, so check before hand. - The elevation turret is pretty tall and doesn't lock in place. In a hunting situation, the turrets can be spun by accident during transportation. Make sure you get in the habit of verifying it's still on zero before you shoot. (That's why the shims are nice.) - This is open to debate, but I think an illuminated reticle is mandatory for hunting scopes. Not having one MIGHT limit you on low light shots, depending on circumstances. But that's not a guarantee.
