#80438 - 06/24/06 "continued" If you aimed at the goat the same way that you would over level ground, the old billy would live to see another winter because the bullet would zip harmlessly over its back. At an upward angle of 45 degrees, the bullet would only fall 8 1/2 inches in respect to line of sight, less than half as much as it would drop when shot horizontally. Exacly the same would be true if you were shooting downhill at a 45 degree angle. By now, we're very much aware that gravity causes the path of the bullet to curve downward. But let's put gravity to work another way. Imagine, if you will, a rifle held perfectly perpendicular so that when it is fired, the bullet goes straight up. If there were no wind or other variables to disturb the bullet's flight, the projectile would go straight up until it ran out of momenum. Then, gravity would pull it straight back down again, base first. Here's where you need to use your imagination. This time, we'll tilt the rifle slightly, say 1 degree off plumb. This time, the bullet's flight is almost straight, but not quite. As it nears the apex of its trip, it begins to curve ever so slightly. So, let's keep shooting (and using our imaginations). Each time we fire, we tilt the muzzle another degree from the vertical, and the bullet path of each succeeding shot is progressively more curved. At last, we come to 90 degrees (horizontal), and the bullet follows its normal curved trajectory. By now, I'm sure that you're getting the picture. we know that our logic is sound, but it must be demonstrated. How? Let's use an ordinary fly rod- the one you take trout fishing! Assuming that the rod is not warped, set the butt on the ground and hold the rod vertically. It remains perfectly straight. Now, holding it by the grip, lower it horizontally. See how it curves downward? (If it is too stiff to bend very much, attach a weight to the tip.) Now, slowly angling the rod from the vertical to dead level, note how gravity causes the curve to increase as the angle nears the horizontal. Now, let's get down to basics. Realizing that shooting uphill or downhill causes the bullet to strike higher than it would on the horizontal, in respect to point of aim, how can we judge where to aim? The easiest way is to use a cartridge with a flat trajectory. Obviously, if a bullet has a relatively little cuve in its trajectory, that curve will be less affected by variations in shooting angle. For example, let's compare two cartridges with widely different trajectories. One is a 7mm Magnum with a 145-grain pointed bullet loaded to 3,100 fps. The other is a .30/30 Winchester with a 150-grain flat-nose slug loaded to 2,100 fps. Both rifles are scope-sighted, with the scopes 1 1/2 inches above the bore centers, and both are sighted in at 200 yards. Changing the angle form horizontal to 45 degrees but still shooting at 200 yards, the 7mm Magnum hits 2 32/100 inches above the point of aim, and the .30/30 is all of 5 65/100 inches high. Now you see why a cartridge with a flat trajectory elimnates some of the guesswork when shooting uphill or downhill. Another way of "guesstimating" where to hold on angle shots is my rule of thumb. For many years, I've reasoned that a bullet fired at an upward or downward angle will hit very close to where it would hit if fired over the horizontal leg of the angle-the horizontal distance to a vertical line running through the target. A triangle is formed by the horizontal line, the steep (angled) line from rifle to target, and the vertical line from the horizontal distance up to the target. In any such triangle, the horizontal line is shorter than the uphill (or downhill) line. Gravity affects the bullet's flight only for as long as the projectile is in the air - along the shorter, horizontal line. By Jim Carmichel Quote:
Aim lower, up-hill or down. In those cases the bullet will have a flatter trajectory.
Mike and Txduckman you got the right idea. I have won many a beer off this one.

Longest shot I ever made on an animal was 440 yards on a coyote with a 7mm/08. No braggin whatsoever it was pure luck. Longest shot I have ever made on anything was 1100 yards on a lifesized metal siluette of a buffalo with a Sharps 45/70. Once again prolly pure luck since I didn't hit the target the other 9 times I shot at it.

This same discussion came up last year. Some people have never shot custom made rifles with hand loads and honestly don't know that the right equipment and years of practice on the range are the key to confidence in longer shots. I have a custom made 7mm with extra twist in the barrel, one and a 1/2 pound trigger, floated in perfect and custom action. I shot the original barrel so much in practice that I actually burnt out the barrel. I've been shooting that gun for over 25 years now. I actually dropped a bull elk at 720 yards (with a range finder) with one shot. I aimed for it to hit the top of the shoulder and broke him down imediately. I had the most awesome rest on a large rock and was shooting straight across a huge canyon that had 3 fingers feeding up it from the bottom. I was guiding a client one evening when we spotted a bull on the side of a hill right at 600 yards away. He insisted that he could make the shot and leveled down on a rest to try it. After he made 4 shots and my growing afraid that he would wound the animal, I timed his shot perfectly as I watched his finger out of the corner of my eye and shot at the exact instant that he fired. I aimed for the neck to try and drop him right there. The bull fell like a ton of bricks. The hunter never knew I shot and has the bull mounted in his home. I congratulated him on the shot. I skinned and quarted the bull that evening while everyone else kept him occupied in the cabin. There was that hand loaded 7mm dead square in his neck. I had told my father what had happened. He watched as I pulled the expanded 7mm out of the meat and just smiled, patted me on the back and walked back into the cabin. I'm not going to tell you the exact yardage that I dropped a turkey. Some of you would call me a liar. But, believe me, it was one heck of a long shot and actaully even further than the bull elk. There were 4 of us one afternoon and everyone was talking about how that sweet 7mm could make long distance shots with no problem. There was a tom standing on the side of a hill, across a river botttom. I found the perfect cedar stump rest and let's just say we ate fried turkey that night for supper. Lucky,,??,, maybe. I do know it was pure luck that the bullet went through his neck and cut his neck 1/2 into. My cousin (a member on here) can testify to that sweet gun. He had never shot any distance over one or two hundred yards. He hunted with the 7mm one day on our ranch. He saw a turkey right at 400 yards and had always wanted to try that shot. I had explained the rifle's characteristics to him in detail before the hunt. He felt confident with his rest and dropped the turkey right there. That's why I went to archery. It became no challenge with a rifle. I first switched to a pistol, but didn't feel any challenge in it either. As I killed 4 deer with 4 shots. Went to a muzzleloader, same result. Decided the string and stick was the most challenging. Now, I can put 6 consecutive shots in a pie plate at 60 yards with my bow. Not bragging, just saying that it's all about practice, practice, practice,,,, no matter what weapon you are shooting. I know that some of you have never really had the opportunity to practice long range shots. If you haven't put the time in on the range, I hope you don't try the shot. Out in West Texas, we have the open land to practice as much as we want to. It's all in the amount of time you put in on the range and knowing your rifle. We have a 1/4 mile long bench and moveable target stands range on our ranch. To answer a question that some nay sayers might be asking..... no, I have never wounded an animal because of taking a long range shot. If I didn't feel right about the shot, I didn't take it. I lost a cull buck 7 years ago with a 120 yard shot. I consider that "sling shot" range. Hit the buck perfectly, but made a mistake of thinking he was dead and jumped him as I walked up to him. Adreniline pumped bucks can run until they run out of blood. If I make a long shot, I'm aiming at a "clean miss or clean kill" zone.

I live in Abilene and have heard of Tommy Hagler, never met him, but I believe the article he posted, as I have heard similar stories of him before. And he right it takes the right equipment and a lot of practice, practice and practice.

Very good post! Like I said from the beginning, if you are shooting a factory rifle with factory loads, you shouldn't attempt a 300 yard shot. But, with a custom rifle along with handloads that will punch the center out of a quarter at 200 yards, a 300 yard shot on a deer is not all that difficult!

The shot was made in the spring of 1970, and had several, very grateful witness's. Strangely enough this was done with open sights. My weapon of choice was a M114A1 155 MM Howitzer.

To HWY_MAN, you guys could shoot, I called your shots in a lot of times, but in 1968 and 1969, as to salvageable meat, once when they killed a water buffalo and some pigs. But most of the time they hit a lot of predators. Mangy like a coyote. I was Infantry, the ultimate hunter, where the prey shoots back.

Awesome! I love to shoot Yotes at long range (300+) with my 22-250 loaded with 40 gr ballistic tips! When you walk up to them there is not a mark on them, then you flip him over and he's missing 1/2 of his whole other side!
Nothing quite like the sound of the bullet echo and then the pop when the bullet connects!!!

Nice shot along with a big ole fine if the game warden finds you. Plus possibly a big lawsuit or jail time for hitting someone with the bullet when it comes down if you missed.
