The longest shot that I have ever made was while I was in the Military. It was 800 meters with a .308 M60 machine gun. When you sling enough led out you can make some pretty amazing shots.

This post should have a wader warning! I have shot competitively, in military and LE situations, and shoot everyday, still. Most people can't see 800m/880 yards. Hitting a pie plate at that range consistently will  win the Olympics. Savages are the best factory shooting guns out there today, bar none. The newer ones with Accu triggers are dang good out of the box. Older ones needed trigger help. I also like the M60 quote, put enough down range something will hit it. I do agree with the idea if you don't practice it don't take it. Never ever take a shot you haven't made in practice 100 times. And to think you people don't believe my black panther stories........

Ya'll must be some blind SOBs. In the military they train you to shoot targets at 600 meters with open sights, using .308 NATO. This is a very makeable shot. I can't help it if everyone needs a 50x scope to see past 300yds. I am not stating that I would take a shot at 600m at a game animal, but don't knock the guys that are capable of making shots like that. LIke you said practice makes perfect and making shots at that distance isn't all that hard with some practice.

My first post here and I know the first lie doen't stand a chance.
At 63 YOA, I remember only 2 successful long shots.
The first was on an antelope. Another hunter and I walked it off and then conservatively estimated it at around 400 yds. It took 2 prone shots with a 30-06 using a hot reload.
The second was on a New Mexico cow elk hunt. Don't know the distance but on the 4th shot, I held about 6 to 8 ft. over her back. Pure luck? You bet.
BTW, last year I missed a huge buck at 50 yards on my Montague County land. Total case of buck fever. It'll get you every time.
Without a sense of urgency, nothing ever happens.

Just for fun lets throw a doping question in here and see what kind of answers come out of the bushes!!  When you shoot uphill, you aim over the target, and if the target is downhill, you hold low. Or is it the other way around? Or does it make any difference? Shooters love to argue this, but seldom do we hear a convincing argument or explanation. The answer is easy once you understand the principle. Before getting into reasons why, let me promise you that the point of aim does indeed change if you shoot at a target either above or below you. Also, as the uphill or downhill angle increases, so does on-target bullet displacement. Let's say you're going after a mountain goat with your new rifle in .270 Winchester caliber. You adjust the riflescope so that the bullet hits dead center at 200 yards. This means that the point of impact is 1 1/2 inches high at 100 yards, about 6 1/2 inches low at 300 yards and 19 1/2 inches low at 400 yards. In the mountains, you get a shot at a big billy at what you and your guide estimate to be close to 400 yards. It's a longish shot, but you roll your down vest into a rifle cushion and, taking a solid rest, settle the crosshairs a few inches over the goat's back. Allowing for the 19 1/2 inch drop at 400 yards, you hold high and figure that the bullet's trajectory will curve right into the goat's boiler room. But you have forgotten something. The goat is 45 degrees above you. What a difference will that make in the bullet's flight in respect to the line of sight? Do you need to aim higher, perhaps? Or lower?

Aim lower. The bullet will rise more cause you are creating a bigger arc for it to travel along I think.

One inch high at 100 yards should be dead center at 200 and 1.5" low at 300, I thought (7 mag). I've shot a couple of deer at 300-350 yards and I don't aim that high, a couple of inches. Both times there was no wind. I think it would be neat to practice different wind conditions and ranges at the range but just don't get around to it. I don't believe I would take the shot with any measurable cross wind.

Aim lower, up-hill or down. In those cases the bullet will have a flatter trajectory.

My personal best is 960 yds at a ground hog with a 22.250.
I watched my best friend put one between a ground hog's eyes at 1115 yards away. If I had not seen it I would not have believed myself. He did it with the same 22.250 mentioned above. My brother has the rifle now. He is a state trooper in Ohio. When I come home we take his SWAT buddies out and show em how it is done. They use 7 mm Mags. It really pi$$e$ them off when I bulleyes an 800 yd target. They get really mad when they find out I was a Navy trained sniper back in the early 70's....hehe..
I haven't shot that far in years.. 45 yards with a 30.30 is my personal best in Texas.....lol...

pairie dog at over 700 yrds with a 204. was measured using the digital odometer on my truck it measured a little over 4/10 of a mile and a mile is 1760yrds

310 yds 2 weeks ago on a hog (7 mag). I normally don't like to take long shots but it was comforting to see the thump that 7 mag can give at 300 +!

there is only one answer alot of people will tell you a bullet will rise in flight but it doesnt it just gradually falls

theres not much to argue about. from the moment the bullet leaves the barrel it is falling and falls the entire time it is in flight.
the only reason people say it rises is because when you site in your rifle you are compesating for the countinous drop and lobing the bullet at an angle and most of the time people dont realize this and think they are defying gravity instead of compesating for it

just come out my way and well shoot some pairie dogs and argue about and then do the steak dinner hey are you the one on the posse board that i talked to about some 223 brass for your veteran buddy. i never heard from him but still have the brass if he wants it.

Let me simplify this a little. It might should have been stated that the barrel was held in a horizontal position. But don't let me stop your fun, i knew where you were headed with this. LOL. Kinda like the time i bet an old boy a 100 dollars i could hit a snuff can at 33ft blindfolded with my 22 pistol. The only stipulation was i got to place the can walk back 33ft before putting on the blindfold and taking the shot. I hit it with the first shot. What i didn't tell him was i was going to place it in the end of a 33 ft joint of 2 7/8 pipe. Funny how many people will fall for that.
