I bet he hopes he drops it soon. Next year will probably be even worse.

I shot a deer similar to that once. When he did the Euro we discovered that his antler had broken off and reattached by his eye. You could clearly see where the antler had been before. Oddly that antler, although misplaced, grew somewhat normal. The antler on the other side he never rubbed the velvet off of it.

Weird. We have one running around that has a nose deformation, i'll try to get a pic. He looks like he has the biggest roman nose you ever saw but in reality its some kind of defect

It appears that he broke the pedicle that the antler originates from, probably from fighting but could also be a car, hung in fence, etc. Don't think it will be worse next year, as there is a good chance he will develop an abscess and die before then (fractures to the skull often end that way). But, if he can avoid and abscess, he can survive it (he obviously survived the initial trauma). In that case antler growth will never be the same on that side. Whichever direction the bone re-ossifies is the direction the antler will grow, which is sometimes bad if a tine grows back towards the skin. Another very interesting thing that can happen is if some of the pedicle cells displace to an abnormal location, trauma-induced antler development can occur. This is usually what happens with unicorn deer (3 pedicles). In other cases, antler growth has been generated at different locations around the skull and even from the neck.

So would that be considered legal for an AR county? Is the overall spread over 13" even though its not outside the ears?

Be a cool euro. Interesting question on the AR.....Looks like that messed up side would be considered a spike anyway.

Thanks for the responses. I think he's branched on both sides. The first pic shows it best

I killed one just like that this year. The pedicle was broke from the skull. My wife and I had been watching this buck for 4 years and I finally got a shot. The strange thing is, the buck never shed the broke antler, he kept it year round.

I swear that looks exactly like a buck we saw on our Kerr county spot. We named him Unicorn. Where are you hunting? And I'm shocked to hear this is common

Don't see a problem on AR. That is at least a thirteen inch spread..........kinda

Outstanding explanation, sir
