Hah! I don't think they did. Cleric will surely set that straight, shortly.

Just got back from the Weminuche Wilderness backpacking. Tried this last year but waist deep snow above timber line and swollen rivers forced us to turn back. We made it all the way through this year. Dropped off at Elk Park and did the 40 mile loop, 10,000 ft of elevation gain ending at Needleton. It is one of the most remote and beautiful places in all of Colorado. I highly recommend it to any one that enjoys backpacking and getting in shape for the upcoming season. I have attached some pics for your viewing pleasure. Amazingly never saw a single elk. Keep me posted on the outcome from the group meeting as I will not be able to attend. Thanks

I was going to try to make it this Saturday, but looks like I'm helping my dad (PMK) build a new stand. He's pretty limited on available weekends the next month or so, and unfortunately this was one of the only weekends we could get one built.

After looking more at the maps I think I may look into hunting up towards the top of of the mesa then the bottom, but that may change depending on the weather.

You can hunt where you like, but in between is where most of them are. You will see a few on top or bailing off the top heading for the nasty stuff in the middle.

Absolutely hunt where you want to. I know where I want to be the first couple of days, but beyond that it depends on what's going on

It can also be hard to understand what all of that map looks like until you see it in person. It'll make more sense in person. It's just part of the learning curve. We spent our first year learning the terrain, basically.

their are always trails leading off a mesa, elk don't just bail off anywhere unless realy surprised. about 25 yards under the edge is good and 10-2o feet off the trail. if you can beat the locals there.

when the going gets really tough, I sit down and rest

cmorsch, horse(s) will be your friend up at the higher portions of the mesa. Air was thin and hills were pretty open for a good distance from the all weather forest service roads up to timber. There were a number of camps up there but almost all had a good string line of horses/mules (4 legged, not Kawasaki type). The mesa has a pretty gradual slope from north to south (south rim ~9,300 ft) with some higher peaks immediately to the north and west that I wouldn't want to hike up. It was a definite workout on day one last year when 3 of us covered slightly over 13 miles on relatively flat ground up on top of the southern portion of mesa (9,800 ft to 9,300 ft back to 9,800 ft over the course of that day). I think we all learned to unload our packs and mine was by far the lightest of our crew. A lot all depends on weather, temperature and whether the larger herd have pushed down (or through) the area. There were resident smaller herds around but the larger herds were still to the north in higher country during the 2nd season last year. This was the earliest I have been up there (used to hit 3rd season) but the weather can be drastically different the later you hunt.

So just to update everyone...

We had a good get together. For the next few weeks just gather personnel gear for the hunt. End of September/beginning of,October I will send out pms to see who is still in. From there we can start planning camp stuff.

I didn't know we were allowed to bring personnel. That'll make it a whole lot easier. grin
