Hey guys,
My name is Cable Smith...I spend most of my time on the Waterfowl section of THF, but I was wondering if anyone knows who has the Texas White Tail Record (typical or non-typical).
I host the Piney Woods Outdoors Show in Texarkana (Amen900 KPYN and Amen900.com) and I would like to interview the record holder and have them describe the hunt too me.
Thanks
Cable

Ah yes..the Brady Buck, legendary for sure, but I don't think there is a written record of it.
I did however set up an interview with one of the Kings who owns the Ranch.
Thanks for the help.

Gun? Bow? Low Fence? High Fence?
You will get lots of opinions depending on what you're looking for.

Yep, also typical vs non-typical.

I don't care if it's typical or not, not sure what low or high fence is...just want a Texas record holder to interview and describe what it was like taking a record deer. bow/rifle doesn't matter too me either. i am planning on shooting my first deer this year. i appreciate the responses.
this interview will educate me as much as it will the listener. If any of you have shot a true trophy that scored in the states top 10 please let me know as I would like to tell your story.

marco barrett, shot one last season that i believe is the highest scoring non typical that was actually shot and not found dead as was the brady buck and the missouri buck that was found hung in a fence outside of st.louis. somebody on here might have some contact info for marco or contact texas trophy hunters magazine and they may be able to contact him.

I don't pretend to know much about DEER HUNTING. I know plenty about bird hunting. I don't know if you listen to the radio much, but most hosts have on guests that specialize in a specific area.
This is why sports talk show hosts have on writers of newspapers and magazines or even other hosts that have a differnt area of expertise.
I am not trying to be rude either. In this instance I readily admit that I haven't ever shot a deer, and that is why I would like a guest to enlighten myself and the audience. I also want the whole story of how the deer was taken as it is beneficial to build up to the moment the hunter realized he had bagged an outstanding animal.
One can only learn from others and through personal experience and I am going to try to do both this year and attempt to harvest a deer.
I have shot all manner of migratory birds, hogs, varmits, and turkey. I spend a lot of time in the outdoors. Trout fish in the Pecos Wilderness every year. Grew up catching bass and catfish all over North Texas. Have caught Peacock Bass in the Amazonas state of Brazil ( where I also speared a 5 ft caiman alligator).
I may seem underqualified to you and I am okay with that. I have never claimed to have the most knowledge of any of these things...My passion is sports talk radio. But when the boss asked me to host the show I jumped at the opportunity! I love the outdoors and I trying to gain knowledge about things I am unfamiliar with everyday.
It's all about the journy,
Cable

Was not meaning to offend you, sorry that it came across that way, tact is not one of my strong points quite often.
There was just something about your post that seemed strange, and I jumped to conclusions.
I guess the reason it came across the way it did, is that killing a State record Deer in Texas, has more to do with the amount of money a person has to spend then on actual hunting skills or accumen.
In Texas, most of the folks that kill the bigger bucks have been watching these animals over several seasons and know the animal they are after just like they know their own dog.
It is usualy not a case of knowing how big it is, but a case of not realizing it was bigger than they thought it was.
Did not mean to come across as feeling you were underqualified, but more as a case of uninformed.
Deer hunting in Texas especially, is not like the things you described, the fishing or the bird hunting, simply because the unknown variables that make those two sports challenging, have been removed for the most part from deer hunting here in Texas.
Rarely is it a case of if i kill a big buck and more of a case of when I will kill the big buck.
JMO, but I feel that to get an accurate accounting of the state of deer hunting here in the state, you would need to do a series of programs and interview folks that hunt all of the different ways of hunting for deer here in the state, than just those that for what ever reason are able to afford the animals that some folks look upon as records.
What would not even be given the classifacation as a cull on a high fence property, might be the deer of a lifetime off of Public Land.
Think about that, see if your bosses will go for a series of shows addressing the complexities of der hunting here in Texas instead of just doping one on the "trophy" animals that have been killed.
Again, I apologize for any thing I said that offended you, I just feel that there is more to the story of deer hunting here in Texas, than the 10 biggest bucks ever taken in the state.

cable: As you can tell, among deer hunters, there is more than one way to measure "biggest"! I would recommend that you go to the website of one of the big Texas "Big Deer Contests" such as here: www.loscazadores.comScroll down thru some of the contest winners and you can get a feel for the different criteria used, and an idea of what "big" is. Maybe you could find one of the contest leaders from your area that would be amenable to an interview. Good luck.

dickkilla, Just what do you do for a living? Give the guy a break and quit bustin' his balls. He's already admitted to having limited knowledge of the subject. It's not as if he got on here pretending to be a knowledgeable expert on the topic. Do you listen to sports talk radio anywhere? Do you think the guys on the shows actually played professional sports? Yet they all get paid to have an opinion about them. To give an example, Russ Martin used to be a regular old DJ for a local radio station in Dallas. Then one day they changed they format and he was an instant success as a talk radio show host.
All I'm saying is the guy deserves a little more respect than what you're offering. I'm glad this website is only for those "experts" in the fields of hunting, fishing and the great outdoors.

This explanation is extremely beneficial...What I really am looking for is prgramming that is: A) educational, or B) a captivating hunting story. Example: I am having the Communications Coordinator of DU on this week to discuss the Rescue the Duck Factory Campaign.
If you ever would like to come on the show as an invited guest to discuss the state of affairs regarding Texas deer hunting and how economics affect what a "true trophy" is you would be more than welcome. I guess the trophy is more about the eye of the beholder than anything else.
Thanks for the insight,
Cable

I appreciate the offer, but there are many folks vastly more knowledgeable than I on the subject.
In fact one of the THF members, PaulB is someone you should contact.
He seems to be quite well versed in the whole game of deer hunting statewide, and I believe he could give your listeners a very accurate idea of what deer hunting is really like across the state. JMO.

My post was not meant to be derogatory. I have a very limited knowledge of professional croquet, but I don't host a show on it. I assumed that when a person hosts a certain type of radio show that they would have a strong background in the subject. Next time you are in Brazil try catching the gator without a spear. Just knock it one the head with a club (it will stun them for a few minutes and they will go into a slow roll), jump on its back, and hold its mouth shut.
By the way, based on some of your previous post about bird hunting, you have plenty to learn.
Never said I did...read my post- don't claim to be an expert on any of them. Never have. Didn't grow up hunting either- parents never had a gun in the house...but I did grow up camping and fishing and being in the great outdoors...and if you were in my situation and had the opportunity to host a show about something you are passionate about and in a career that you wanted to be in- wouldn't you do it?
Thats why I joined this forum...to take experiences and knowledge from those who have been accumulating it for years, and then applying to my own adventures.
I aint mad at ya, and am not trying to start a verbal war with you. I am sure I could learn from you too.
-Cable
And I have caught the gators without spearing them, just not one that was 5 ft long- was about to reach in and grab a huge one when my guide grabbed my arm and shook his finger NO at me.
I then realized that he was trying to tell that his eyes were too far apart (meaning he was huge) and that it wouldn't be wise to try and barehand this one.
I'll stick to catching the 3 footers and spearing anything bigger than that........tasted good!

Cable, I am sorry for the responses that you have received. We try to act like a big family here and share stories and pictures about something we all love - hunting.
Just like in life we cannot pick our family members -- some on the board are nicer than others. As a new hunter I take what I can and just blow off the rest.

You know, I thought that I was the biggest arse on here, but in this case you seem set on taking my title from me.
Cable asked a question, yes, it seemed strange and we made our comments.
He explained his situation, and purposely trying to push someone that seems earnest in what he is asking, away from hunting and learning about hunting is not accomplishing anything for anyone.
Including you.
Cable, my apologies for my behavior, you asked a legitimate question, some of us seem to be unable to accept the fact thaty not everyone feels about hunting the sme way we do, so it is better to close the door in their face and let them draw their own conclusions about the fellowship of hunters.
Best of Luck with your project.

I ain't getting into with you over this. I am not an expert on anything.
But you seem to want to be an expert on trying to belittle Cable, simply because he is not as up on hunting as you seem to believe you are.
You have a Good Day.
