Finished up the Book Thief the other day and about half way through the Smartest Guys in the Room: The Amazing Rise and Scandalous Fall of Enron. Pretty good so far.

Enron book was very interesting. The sheer amount of information in it got bland towards the end but I'm glad to have read it. It took some serious research to write.

Finished up Killing Lincoln just now. It was good too.

About to work on Accounting made Simple. I'm about half way through and reading a little here and there.

I dunno..... I'm pretty sure I wouldn't want Kyle as a friend, and I'm certain that I wouldn't want him as an enemy....pretty cold-blooded guy that I'm glad was on our side.

I enjoyed the vignettes written by his wife. She opined often--and he even agreed--that Kyle loved the SEALs more than he loved her and his kids.

Fortunately, the last chapter brought redemption to the book, which heretofore was all about unrepentant death-dealing. His formation of Craft International to help damaged servicemen brought some much-needed humanity to his character. (And it would ultimately lead to his death.)

I was glad he decried the treatment of Vietnam veterans, who I remember were ridiculed--and even spat upon--when they returned home. And I'm glad he sought to reaffirm his role as a father and a husband.

But mainly, the book was an unapologetic tome on glorifying war and the killing it entails. That would make it a fine yarn for some, but not for others. Definitely PG-13.

Lone Survivor is better, IMO. Band of Brothers is better too. All Quiet on the Western Front is best.

I kind of got that from him too.

Lone Survivor is better because it's a fictional story about something that actually happened. Therefore it's going to be more reader friendly.

Fictional story? I wish Luttrell could meet you in person and see if you had the nads to say it to his face.

Finished up accounting made simple tonight. It's a quick 100 pages that just hits on the very basics. This semester I am taking financial and managerial accounting. Since the class will be my first encounter with any sort of accounting, I wanted to prepare myself somewhat. At least now I won't be going in completely blind.

Started Anne Frank tonight. Kind of an odd book to be reading as a grown man, I know, but oh well.

Good luck finishing either of them.

Lone Survivor is way too long, boring the reader into a stupor over the mundane world of basic training. But it finishes nicely, however.

American Sniper is an us-vs-them, John Wayne, we're good/they're bad, book written in a pompous style by an unrepentant death-dealer. You want Chris Kyle with you in a dark alley, but you don't want him as a friend.

The writers of both books are Texans, which should appeal to most here on the forum. And in real life, Kyle gets high marks for his work with PTSD veterans, which ultimately cost him his life. Marcus is a regular at many hunting conventions, where I have met him personally.

The wife and I are going to the theatre today to see Lone Survivor. And soon, American Sniper will hit the big screen. I'm betting both movies will be better than the books that spawned them, especially if the films can infuse some humanity into the protagonists. Kyle really needs a softer edge to his character to make him digestible.

I'm about half way through The Bully Pulpit, by the always readable Doris K. Goodwin. Good stuff about TR, Taft, and the America of a century ago.

I'm reading the ever growing Texas Penal Code, then onto General Orders, SOP, and City Code. Started studying for the next SGT test. If not reading that, then normally reading offense and arrest reports looking for suspects and crime trends.

Quite a few of Siringo's books have been reprinted and are available on Amazon. These are NOT literature, these are reprinted dime novels of yesteryear.

Bobby Cole (president of Mossy Oak Biologic) is an author and has two very good books out.

-The Dummy line
-Moon Underfoot

I enjoyed them and they are cheap if you have a kindle (2.99 I think).

Same here. I couldn't put it down once I started. I'm a Texas history buff and enjoy reading anything about the Comanche and Kiowa nations. My newest read is Graham Nash's autobiography, "Wild tales", a rock 'n roll life.

I am in the process of reading all of James Harriot's books. He was a vet who wrote al animals large and small. They had a TV series based on his books.

I understand what you are saying here, but...................

An "unrepentant death dealer" is EXACTLY what Kyle should have been when he was deployed. If I'm out there on the street, I don't want a sniper in overwatch that is gonna hesitate because he thinks Abdul might be an OK guy when he is not holding an AK.

You are right that it makes him "undigestable" to some. He was not a feel good super hero. He was a SEAL sniper doing his job, and that job is ugly.

trv, you and I agree 100%.

Chris Kyle was a !@#$%^&*, but at least he was our !@#$%^&*. Kyle, and others like him, do the necessary jobs that we pansies side-step or shun altogether.

I honostly did not read through all 20 pages of this topic so maybe it has already been mentioned but John A. Hunter wrote several books that I think most on this forum would enjoy. John A. Hunter was a big-game hunter in Africa in the early 1900's and the books contain his exploits during his many hunts. In my opinion, Hunter is the best book of his but all are worth a read. The only titles I can think of, other than Hunter, are Hunter's tracks and White Hunter.

His stories include being hired by governments to track and kill man eating lions that would pull tribesman out of their tents at night and proceed to eat them within ear shot of the other villagers or having a angery rhino or elephant charge straight at him while his tribal trackers run leaving him to fave the beast alone. He also has several stories where he guides wealthy barons or baronesses that want to brag they have killed the mighty African beasts but in reality never want to leave camp, so John himself has to go and do the killing. Overall John A. Hunter's books are a great collection of stories that is difficult to put down when you begin to read them.

I decided to take a break from all the new books on my list and re-read Game in the Desert Revisited. It's not my favorite "how to" book by JO'C, but its my favorite narrative that he wrote.

Let it snow. I'm gonna kick up my feet and enjoy O'Connor.....again!
