I may be wrong but I do believe those are regular persimmons. The Texas persimmons are black when they are ripe. When they're green they are every bit as bitter as the ones in the pic.
These persimmons are from mature 40'+ trees.......they are never black in color and are sweet to eat in late september or october. Tbar

There are dozens of types of persimmon trees. What he's describing sounds like an American Persimmon. The true native Texas persimmon is much, much smaller.

The Noble Foundation lists the orange ones as the "common persimmon". http://www.noble.org/

I have about 100 of them on my place but they never produce fruit. You would think I would have a female tree in there somewhere.

Texas, or sometimes called Mexican persimmon, has black fruit usuallya bout the size of a cherry. I know about the orange ones, I grew up in Kansas, and black persimmons freaked me out when I first found out about them. That and the fact that they ripen in July and August and not the fall.

There are two native Persimmons in Texas- Mexican (Diospyros texana) which grows in the Hill Country and is more drought tolerant Common(Diospyros virginiana) which is more of a tree in East Texas and should be fine with 30" of rain.
Natives of Texas Nursery in Kerrville has/had the Mexican while some of the East Texas nurseries should have the Common

I planted 2 of the Fuyu persimmon back in 2001, they were bearing fruit by 2003, the drought killed them though, even with drip irrigation. You can graft persimmon to peach trees, you have to make sure you put both male and female onto the same tree though. A lot of the native persimmon are way too sour for people until the first frost, but they get sweet enough for wildlife earlier in the fall. Some of the Asian grocery stores sell the big sweet ones that have the seeds inside, the ones that came from Korea are the ones to look for, those trees grow 50-80 feet tall. Problem is that you have to plant 20 seeds to get 4 or 5 to grow here, so it's a long term project.

That snake is probably hunting the mice or birds eating the persimmon

I've been looking at growing these too here. My mom has several of the Japanese variety that get as big as softballs. Would pick them and take out to the camp. Deer ate them up.
Haven't checked locally yet, but know that Burgess Seed and Tree Company sells them online and in their catalog if someone couldn't find locally.

WOW old thread! I like persimmons too, only place I have seen them naturally in numbers has been in NE Texas. Would like to have a couple in the creek bottom myself.

They do best next to creeks or ponds...they like a little shade and lots of water. The native ones anyway.
