Since there was a fruit tree thread started and their was some talk about Persimmon Tree I wanted to start a thread dedicated to this particular tree.

I wanted to know what epxerience / feedback people had with growing these trees in Texas? Good or bad experience?

How they did with 30-35 inches of rain? How long do they take to start producing fruit? Where is the best place to buy these in Dallas/Fort Worth or out towards Comanche County?

Thanks

Let'em go, so they can grow.

No persimmon expert here, but they grow EVERYWHERE in the hill country. Remember that there are 2 types of persimmons, the natives, and the fuyu persimmons, which you can buy the fruit in the grocery store. Fruits from the natives are like the size of quarters, whereas the fuyus are like small to medium tomatoes. I'm sure the deer eat both, but I'd expect the natives to be much cheaper. If you go to a nursery, I would think they would likely have the fuyus.

the ones I've seen have only been about the size of a dime. I spent an entire summer cleaning them off of fencelines on my brother's place in centerville (little centerville), they seem ti grow pretty good there b/c they are everywhere.

"they grow EVERYWHERE in the hill country"

I'm glad someone else said that deer2

I try to spread the seeds. The fruit is gone by hunting season.

I have seen them try to CLIMB a fence to get at the fruit.

Funny story. I used that Persimmon jelly from Walmart out back and the deer wouldn't touch it. I poured it on some dead oak leaves that were still on the scrubs over in Alabama and they beat feet to it and ate every dry leaf????

They do love the fruit here though.

You might can store it in the freezer and break it out for huntin season. Don't leave it in a jug like I did on the back porch, turned to some sorta booze that looked like chewin tobacco spit.

Deer eat the daylights out of them down here. They are usually edible in August and are all around good for wildlife.

I have no idea where you would buy one, sorry.

They are really easy to grow from seeds if you want to do that. Last spring I planted some seeds in 2' long pieces of pipe that I had filled with mulch. They are about 18" tall right now.

Don't know which species you are wanting info on. In the Hill Country we have a tree I always knew as Mexican persimmon. It's a tree/shrub from 8 to 10 foot tall.

The trunk of the tree is smooth and light in color similar to a crepete myrtle. Fruit about size of nickel to quarter. It is leathery in texture, is green and turns black when ripe. Deer, racoons, turkeys, etc love them and I eat some fresh of the tree. At De Leon at Womack Nursery (google them), they show a native persimmon on their web site under wildlife cover.
Hope this helps.

Those are good prices too. $3 per tree at 2-4 feet?

Going to have to go ahead and order a few more.

I hunt over them all the time. One problem with planting them.. is they take a long time to mature and start producing fruit.

7-10 years, from the reading I've done. Still, I plan on having this property until I die, so it'll be worth it to me and my son down the road to plant them all now.

Unfortunately, I've ordered 75 oaks, 25 pecans, and 5 persimmons and I'll probably order a few more fruit trees before I'm done. Going to have my hands full.

TxsOaks, I got my persimmon trees from Rohdes Nursery in Garland. If you will pm me, I can mail some seeds if you want to start them yourself.

Also, be aware that there are male and female trees. The female trees produce fruit.

My papa owns a tree farm in Marlin, Texas and he sells them...

I had one on my property when we bought it. I left it where it stood and cleaned out the surrounding cedars. It is only about 6 to 8 feet tall with a spread about the same. When it drops fruit in the spring and early summer, everything is attracted to it. I have even seen foxes sitting under it in the middle of the day trying to get the low hanging fruit. I gathered some of the fruit to try growing them from seeds on my own. Even after trying cold stratification and seed hull scarring, I have yet to have one sprout.

I may be wrong but I do believe those are regular persimmons. The Texas persimmons are black when they are ripe. When they're green they are every bit as bitter as the ones in the pic.
