No arguement there, individual hunting areas of any kind can and usually do have individual rules that are different from State and Federal Regulations. For example some people who hunt the local Corps lakes don't realize that some of them do not allow shot larger than #4 and no exemption to shot size for non tox. We can go on and on about individual public areas with restrictive rules, but General Texas State and Federal regulations do not require a canoe or kayak to be anchored.

Using jeh7mmmag's link on the land and lease forum I briefly visited every NWR website on the Texas Coast, pulled up the hunting regulations PDF for each. No NWR regulations has anything published different from General State and Federal regulations in regard to what we are discussing.

This is a common misconception. I have proved one game warden wrong on this.

And maybe an old retired SA GW too, but I have issued a couple of tickets for this in Kansas, but you know laws do change sometimes. I was told at Texas Point face to face that, "I had to use an anchor in Sabine Surf."
Point is just take time to ask, didn't hurt anything to drop an anchor, before shooting

that is why I always make sure my kayak is firmly secured on a flatbed trailer while being pulled through the fields by a tractor, for one it provides excellent jump shooting on geese and cranes and most importantly I don't want to get a ticket

If your boat had a motor, even a trolling motor, he was correct. I also had a Game Warden (Heath) on Ray Roberts tell me I both could not shoot dove from my Canoe, and I could not hunt Ducks unless it was beached, tied up, or anchored. I received a letter form the Chief Law Enforcement Officer at TPWD in Austin that said otherwise. I used to carry that letter when hunting that way in case a game warden ever tried to stop me from hunting that way. Game Wardens can be wrong. The game warden that replaced him had never seen a snipe before when he encountered me hunting them. Now that's another story.

Now Kansas is not Texas and it may have changed since you where working there, but here is what Kansas states in the regulations today. It is almost identical to the Federal wording and Texas's wording.

From or by means of any motor boat or sail boat unless the motor has been completely shut off and/or the sail furled, and its progress from there has ceased.

Oh and sculling a creek for wood ducks, I barely have time to drop my paddle. I don't have time to drop an anchor.

That was fast. Only took a few minutes to get a reply from Austin. Nothing has changed.

John,

Yes, you can hunt from a canoe or kayak that is drifting or being poled
/ paddled.

You are not allowed to be underway by means of a sail or a motor.

I checked with the Assistant Chief Game Warden in Austin. He said "It is legal to shoot waterfowl from a kayak that is drifting, or moving as a result of being paddled." I did not ask about NWR or Federal water. I asked about public water.

I have a second kayak for guests. It is small though. It is the smaller version of Stinkbellys boat. If our schedules work out for a hunt we will take them out and I will let you paddle the big boat. Big IF there, I am bad about promising more hunts than I have time for and my shift work usually does not click with others schedules.

I too think a 3-D type of Camo is the way to go. I have had ducks almost hop up and stand on mine when rigged that way.

But some days I think ducks just look at a kayak as if it was just another log on the bank.

I have a castaway 116 sit-on-top... I use the swivel rod holder as a gun rest, can fit a good size decoy bag (i'd say a dozen or two dekes) on the back deck, and probably a shooters bag or more inside the hatch in front.

Has anyone tried to paint up their kayak? I heard that the paint won't stick to it very well. My kayak is already OD green, but may have a little glare. I was going to either use Max-4 burlap or get those packaged stalks from academy to cover me up

Best tip I can offer any yaksmen- If you need it- tie it to you or your boat, if you want to keep it dry- use a dry bag or dry box and tie it to your boat!

Wasn't born in Texas, but I got there as fast as I could.

My stripes are painted on mine. The rest of the camo is factory. I had a glare on it so I sanded it with rough sand paper, cleaned it, then painted the stripes on it. They were supposed to be tan like cat tails, but they almost look white. I did it 6 years ago and they are flaking some, but it is camo and shouldn't be perfect. I can always add more if I need. I used to use the 3d camo, but it was a lot of work and if it drags, it is like dragging an anchor.

Yeah, I'll just duck tape some burlap on the top and leave the bottom the way it is and ther'll be no drag!

What do yall think about rigging the paddle as a 'magnum-mojo' for bringing them in from FAR away??? haha

Paddle as a mojo stake. That's good. I never thought of that. My paddle is black. That would work when the mud is soft enough to stab my paddle deep enough.

John, I'm thinking he's meaning the paddle as the mojo wings!! HA!! Just spin 'em in your hands.

Yea, but one could actually take the paddle down and slip the mojo stake in the end of the half paddle if they needed some elevation for it. Like above marsh grass or something. It could work if needed. Only thing is all I ever use anymore is a floating mojo.
