Looking for input, like how many deeks do you take or where does your gun ride? Do you paddle long distances? Is it a sit on top or sit in?

Dr. Seuss has a yawning yellow yak. he also has a gak. Imagine that... a yawning yellow yak along with a gak... that's whack.

I have been looking for a yak for a while, but have not found anything in my $$ range.
It's not skybusting, if you make the shot.

I got a Hobie Sport "Hank Parker" edition, but have not used it for hunting yet. I think I could carry about 2 doz of the Featherlight inflatable deeks. I would buy one of those gun holders used on an atv and jury rig it to the yak somehow, but in all honesty this yak does not seem stable enough to be crossing your frigid waters local lake with all your gear. Sit on tops seem to be the rage these days, but I wanted more room for gear, more speed, and ability to use the boat as a layout, so I have a sit in. I can easily take 3 dozen decoys. I carry my gun loose, in bottom along side seat if traveling. If sculling/hunting, across my lap tethered to the boat. Dog could be at front, between my legs, or behind me depending on how I am hunting or if I am just traveling. Gear packed and balanced in boat accordingly.
If you get a small boat, you will likely wish you had a bigger one. Pay attention to the carry capacity when shopping.
I use an Old Town Predator K114 which was an upgrade from a 9.5 ft Camo Mainstream. You could also look at a layout type boat like Roadgoeson20 has. It would be more practical for duck hunting, but I needed a more multi purpose boat that I can also do float trips, fishing, and bay trips in.
A proper boat for the purpose will not be cheap, but it is cheaper in the long run, no gas cost, no annual registration and little to no maintenance. I enjoy mine and again this year will continue to use it more than my 17hp duck boat.

I have the pelican castaway 116, bought it used cheap. I didnt want to get too deep into something I havent done before. It works fine for fishing lakes, rivers and even took it to the bay once. I kinda plan on taking it hunting this year, but my roomate just brought his jon boat so we will see.
Sniper John, are there any laws concerning hunting from a kayak? My fishing buddy thought you had to get some kind of permit to shoot from a kayak.

Might be too late now, but I suggest anyone wanting to use a kayak for hunting, go swimming. Put on the swim trunks and take it out to the lake while the water is still warm. Test it's limits. Make it tump over with you. See what it takes. If you plan on taking a dog, get it used to it. See what your boat can take when the dog suddenly wants out.
There are no registrations or permits for human powered kayaks or canoes in texas.
But if a trolling or gas motor, you then need tx numbers.
Oklahoma requires it's residents to register all kayaks, but Texas residents in Oklahoma waters are exempt.
Also, note. Though regulations prohibit shooting from a boat under way by motor or sail. This does not apply to human powered kayaks. You can shoot from a kayak that is being paddled or sculled. Tether your gun. And tether your paddle if doing this.
If hunting from a sculled canoe with a single blade paddle, I like to carry an extra paddle so I can just drop the first one to grab my gun. Then I can use the second paddle to retrieve my first paddle after shooting.

Thats good advice. Ive been fishing out of my yak for two years and I dont have a dog, so I know its limits pretty well. I was fortunate enough to roll the thing on a cold day last March. Not a lot of fun paddling back as the sun was going down.

thats good advice sniper. Ive got a 2 man pelican and its real stable. I can put my little bro up front with aabout 3dz decoyson his lap. Mymojo fits in a buckket w/my camo netting, inbetween my legs. My gun gets strapped behind me with the bungee cords and any extras go underneath the stern behind me. I love it, its great for fishing in too.

I have a Heritage Featherlite 9.5 Angler. It is a sit in style kayak. There is enough room in it that I can almost lay flat. I was going to be hunting out of it this fall but I ended up getting a boat.
Before I got the boat I was building a homemade outrigger. I took a 7 ft. long 2"x4" and attached a boat fender to each end. I attached the outrigger by placing a board in kayak and having 3 bolts going up through both boards and then using wing nuts to be able to put it all together by hand.

I have a brand new gnu if you want it. She is pretty honary at times, but she will walk till you drop. Maybe she and your yak can get together some evening for drinks, small talk, and whatever goes on behind closed doors?

Good advice on the outrigger. May I suggest outriggers made of large PVC Drain pipe- You can use them as buoyancy/stability, and also stuff things in it if you make a capped end.

I have a yak. It is a Mainstream Patriot. I think it is about 11 feeet. I can get all my gear, a dog, and about 4 dozen decoys in it. I tie them on the top, put them in front of my feet, and put them in the cargo hole. If I flip, it will be an automatic decoy spread because they will go everywhere. I like the sit in type. I feel like it has less chanse of dropping stuff into the water and it gives you cover if you use it as a blind. Like SniperJohn said, test it's limits. We took a buddy out duck hunting the week he bought his yak and he turned it over. He lost most of his stuff. Tie the gun to the boat. I have a waterproof gun case for my shotgun. By the end of the hunt, my yak is always full of water and I don't want the gun sitting in water. I am pretty sure that a yak or canoe must be anchored before you shoot the gun while hunting. Here are some pictures of us teal hunting. My dog is between my legs in the yak during the hunt.

No, Gary, you have been misinformed. That is not true, not unless you have a motor on your kayak.

Hummmm You guys better look that one up again, if your on some NWR systems, or in some of the coastal waters, you must be anchored, with all movement stopped before shooting.

Bob, that is true only if your boat has a motor or sail. It is a Federal Regulation that the States carry over into the State regulations. Some states may add to the federal wording to include human powered craft, but Texas does not. A canoe or kayak powered only by paddle, pole, or oar is not affected by the "underway by motor or sail" part in either Federal or Texas rules. I challenge you to show me otherwise in the regulations.

yep without a motor or a sail it is a sneak boat and those are legal.

John I agree with your statement, but notice I said NWR Systems, and Coastal Waters. These NWR are under Federal Control, so state regulations don't always cover these area's. Most NWR add to the state regulations, but it would be wise to ask. Also note that Sabine Surf ( Jefferson County Tx, out of Sabine Pass requires hunters have their anchor out while hunting from a BOAT. The regulations don't always say motor or sail boat. I'm not looking to have a debate over this, just pointing out. " One should check, before hunting Federal Controlled Systems "
