That end of the season run is also one of my favorite too. A great time to get those wall hangers.

all look like green wings to me. How many blues do you usually shoot a year in late season?

I hunted around Ray Roberts and only saw Spoonies on Sunday. Saw a flock of 5 teal on Monday. But still have 2 weeks for them to come down. Where were you on RR?

the thing about baiting is, even a rookie hunter could have a 170 bird season if they bait holes

Certainly the larger ducks are pushed south by cold. Some do and some don't. Some will only migrate when they have to when everything freezes over. Others migrate no matter what, these are the birds you kill the beginning of the season. There is a good number of mallards that migrate early season, other mallards will only migrate when they have to. Last year we had a good number of mallards that got here for the opener. After a while they got shot out, and we needed some cold weather to push some more down.

How does someone get started teal hunting? This would be my first year and I want to get it right. I am in Houston if anyone wants to show me the ropes. I mostly hunt on public land.

Not near as many this year as opposed to last year. Of course, it helps to have some actual water.

How does someone get started teal hunting? This would be my first year and I want to get it right. I am in Houston if anyone wants to show me the ropes. I mostly hunt on public land. The best thing to do would be to make friends with people that (i) are on leases, (ii) have property with birds or (iii) have a skinny water boat and access to the coast South of about Freeport or Northeast of the ship channel. Alternatively, get some friends or people at work to join a lease with you (likely too late for that at this point). Public land within easy driving range of Houston is going to be totally raked over, crowded and, probably, dangerous as s@$% with all the Duck Dynasty craze.
