Some do and some don't. Some will only migrate when they have to when everything freezes over. Others migrate no matter what, these are the birds you kill the beginning of the season. There is a good number of mallards that migrate early season, other mallards will only migrate when they have to. Last year we had a good number of mallards that got here for the opener. After a while they got shot out, and we needed some cold weather to push some more down.

How does someone get started teal hunting? This would be my first year and I want to get it right. I am in Houston if anyone wants to show me the ropes. I mostly hunt on public land.

Been seeing them up here and there for a month, with more and more lately. I'll start scaring them your guys way starting this Saturday from Illinois, hunting pressure will get them moving your way

The best thing to do would be to make friends with people that (i) are on leases, (ii) have property with birds or (iii) have a skinny water boat and access to the coast South of about Freeport or Northeast of the ship channel. Alternatively, get some friends or people at work to join a lease with you (likely too late for that at this point).

Public land within easy driving range of Houston is going to be totally raked over, crowded and, probably, dangerous as s@$% with all the Duck Dynasty craze.
