I was out in North Texas this weekend scouting around and saw a good number of Teal!
Should be a good early Teal season....
Anybody else seeing any?

Nada where I hunt. We are usually packed with them.
We interrupt this marriage for hunting season.

I haven't been following the weather in the north central states, but have they had any good cold fronts to start pushing birds down our way?

They will be here when the season opens. Also they are here one day, gone the next. They move through quick. And they don't move in one giant flock. A spot may have no teal Monday, teal on Tuesday, none on Weds, and be loaded up on Thurs.

Teal don't migrate on cold fronts. They will be here when the season opens. So they don't fly south when the winds come out of the north? I guess they just check their calendar.

Actually, the ducks Hazelton described "sensed" key changes in their environment long before the December blast ultimately pushed them southward. While a dramatic change in weather was the immediate signal for the birds to find food and habitat elsewhere, the internal clock that determined their departure was set months before by the gradual lengthening of spring daylight.
Among waterfowl, regular seasonal movements (i.e., migration) are driven by changing photoperiod, the relative length of day and night during a 24-hour period. As a result, migration is physiologically "hard-wired" in waterfowl and other migratory birds. Beginning in spring, increasing day length affects hormone response and starts the clock ticking. Accumulation of fat, migration, breeding, and the molt follow in succession over the next weeks and months.

A handful of groups of blue wing reported out west in the Throckmorton area but overall they still scarce at best.

Accumulation of fat, migration, breeding, and the molt follow in succession over the next weeks and months. Also known as Zugunruhe. Zungunruhe drives them, but you have to admit major weather changes do have some bearing on the short term start of the migration. Something has to determine if they move today, tomorrow, or yesterday. Weather can also effect the start of the migration related to having something to eat. Food availability cut off equals get moving to find some. And weather can effect the timing of the hatch. Late hatch equals a later start of the migration. Not a big deal with the regular season, but when your talking about when the peak of the migration is during a two week season, weather matters IMHO. But then as healthy as the blue wing teal population is, I doubt any of us would ever notice those changes.

I was under the impression that teal migrate before the larger ducks on account of being more sensitive to cold, i.e. that the first frosts send them south. Is their migration time purely based on length of the day rather than weather? Certainly the larger ducks are pushed south by cold.

Is their migration time purely based on length of the day rather than weather? Certainly the larger ducks are pushed south by cold. There are a lot of factors but they "start" is kicked off by photoperiod. Sure lack of food duck to freeze and die off will move them as well. But it's not a real factor year after year for the "early" teal. Also I have posted this before but my favorite season of the year is the second teal season these are my last week of the season the last three years. It's teal season #2 in late January. Just because they are small doesn't make em sensitive to cold.
