I've got a 20ga pump with a number 2 pencil in it as a plug.

My grandfather put the pencil in sometime in the 30s.

It just works.

Last time game warden checked mine, he was jambing that third shell as hard as he could trying to break my "plug" so he could write me a ticket. I bet that broken stick and ticket could have been from when the whittled stick broke and let room for one more shell to go in the magazine. In my case, he wasn't going to break the steel 1/4" socket extension I had in there. Just make sure whatever you use can pass the game warden test when he tries his best to get it to break.

Ya. Many things will work. Do not stick a "green limb" piece in the magazine tube in a pinch and LEAVE it in there. Moisture will come out of the wood as it dries and rust out the tube.
