I have three tuned down below 3 but done by a quality smith with zero issues That's great to hear because I have a 700 Classic in a 7mm-08 and another in a 30-06 and another in .223 that are all tuned to right at 3 lbs and have never had this problem. I keep running across the stories about the trigger on the 700 but it always seems to be a rather short story and never really all the details or more support to the claims of why it happened.

My 243 stock remmy is at 3. The only factory trigger I might go below 3 with is the new winnys...but feel if you truely want to go below three buy an aftermarket that's designed for under 3..like timney or jewell...that way you never have to second guess how good your gun smith is. My 2 cents

I took a Remington 700 BDL in to use for a custom rifle build to a gunsmith. When it took it apart to give me the stock and barrel, he showed me why some have issues with triggers. I had just bought this rifle and never fired it. He showed me the trigger and it was gummed up with oil and dirt. He said that is the leading cause of a lot of the trigger issues with Remington is that people do not clean or improperly clean the triggers. I have never had a problem with Remingtons and this will be my 5th one to own.

I recall a Moderator posting earlier this year about him experiencing the same kind of unintentional discharge, from a remington 700, just like the OP experience. From what he posted on THF, finger was not on the trigger and trigger had not been modified since leaving the factory in stock condition.
Bottom line, a few unlucky individuals have a statistical minority of remington 700's that will discharge upon moving the safety from safe to fire position, not each time, but once is too many.

I'm not calling anybody out because I'm sure it has happened but I have a-lot of trigger time with 700's
Some older than I am Some with over 1-3K rounds through them Some with old Triggers Some with new Triggers Some with Factory setting Some with sub-3.0lbs
I have yet to have an AD with any.
I have witnessed 2 different people at a shooting range claim they had an AD when there trigger was clearly inside the guard, did they hit the trigger ? did they mess with the trigger ? I could not answer 100% accurately but its not beyond suspicion.
Are there Remington's that fire on there own, probably Are 90% of the claims user induced by modifying stock trigger packs and or bad weapons handling , probably

Timney replacement and done. X-Mark doesn't seem to have these issues. I replaced all of the older ones (if the safety wont go from safe to fire on an uncocked bolt, it's an older model)with Timneys. Issue solved, sleep regained, kids get to use the rifles again. Never had an AD incident before I made the swap, but it's worth my peace of mind.

I had a Remington 700 in 270 that would go off dang near everytime you closed the bolt or shook the gun!! Now for the rest of the story: Some garage gunsmith decided to do a "trigger job" on the gun and replaced one of the springs with a spring that looked like it came out of a Bic pen. Now you know (in my best Paul Harvey voice)....... "The Rest Of The Story!

Will probably just get a timney in it. However, some posters have noted that Remington will just replace it which is good to know.

There is CNBC Special about this "Remington Under Fire". The "Walker Trigger" was replaced in 2007, most popular factory trigger ever but defective from day one according to Merle Walker the engineer of this trigger mechanism in 1950. Safety misfires and bolt misfires are common.
