You can call in yotes during the day I ususally call til noon and then get back at it and hr or two before sunset. Play the wind and position yourself well theres a ton of predator hunters here and they will chip in more useful advice good luck.

Coyote hunting in the daytime is way more fun than calling at night IMO!!! As long as the weather is cool you can call all hours of the day, better if its not to windy. Set up high where you can see for a long ways and hide your movements as good as possible and use a decoy if you have one.

I do most of my calling during the daytime. Be sure to watch the wind and be able to have a clear shooting lane behind you, or where you can see to the sides, because the coyotes like to circle to get your scent.

Is there a certain time of day that is better than others. I really rather hunt during the day because it seems harder to call at night, trying to hold the light and the gun. Thanks

I'm really looking foward to get my first coyote. I went out Friday night, i think i called in 2, I saw there eyes with the light, but the time i got the gun up they were gone. I guess 2 million candle power is a bit too much.

(my dad was messin around by howlin and got the all stirred up lol) i didnt get a shot cause he kept a big cedar tree inbetween him and me. I have yet to take a yote, but i am going for the dusk hours and i feel i am geting closer.

There are no concrete rules to coyote hunting, except that they are physically superior to you in every way. When "playing" the wind, if at all possible, I try to set up with a cross wind(wind at your 3 or 9 o'clock) this way I can see both "up" and "down" wind. They will at times come from your up wind side. A buddy is good to have as well, set a few yards apart with you backs facing each other, this way you have 360 degrees of view and both can see the "up" and "down" wind side. If using an e-caller, I place my e-caller about 30yds infront of me and 30yds up wind of me to get the sound away from my location enough that when they see the decoy, they don't see me, but are still in shotgun range in the event that one does ninja his way in that close. If setting up on the ridge of a hill, same set up, but make sure that one guy is on one side of the hill and the other guy is on the other side so you don't have blind spots.
If you aren't reasonably certain that you can connect with your shot for any reason, give him a pass. A coyote that is called and shot at and gets away, will go to ground and become a sneaky ninja, unlikely you will ever see him again. Give him a pass, call him in again later and kill'em.
Camo for coyotes is highly over rated(although it don't hurt either). Coyotes tend to key in on movement more than anything else. A good decoy (Turkey feather tied to a stake in the ground is cheap and effective) and little movement on your part are all that is really NEEDED to be successfull. I've called and killed coyotes while wearing shorts and flip-flops.
I'm no expert, but coyotes are all I hunt anymore. It's my passion and have dedicated myself to the "learning" of doing so....mostly through trial and a whole lot of error. Any questions, feel free to ask. Be glad to help, if I don't know the answer, I know people who will.

Is it possible for coyotes in a rural area to strictly nocturnal? I live in a subdivision, surrounded by some farm land. It's were I usually hunt. Ive tried calling twice during the day, with no luck. I went out last night around 6:30, made 2 stands with no luck. When I was leaving around 8:00 pm, I started to hear them howl and making noises. Maybe I went out too early. Noone around here has seen them during the day, only at night or early morning.

Well I just thought with all the noise from the neighborhood, they would be scared to come out during the day!

Hunting pressure is a major concern if you try to hunt during the day. Yotes that have been hunted no matter how slight, learn very quick!
The best day I ever had, was in the afternoon around 2PM on Labor Day. I had finished filling feeders, had on absolutely no camo, sat down on a stool under a large live oak. In less than 5 minutes I had a big male no more than 15 yards from me, watching me as I turned and popped him. Then I began calling again and in no more than 5 minutes, 4 more returned and I shot 3 of the 4!
But, this was the first time anyone had hunted this area for coyotes.
On the other hand, some packs make a big circle around an area where they like to hang out. You may catch them when they are nearby....or they may be on the outside of their circle, and you won't get any response at all.
If you're hunting on your lease or can return to an area, often, listen in the mornings and evenings and you'll spot where the yotes are bedding down or have become centralized. They send out locator calls to gather their pack, or to find a pack. Use that to your advantage, when you go set up.

How long do yall call before you move to another spot, how far do you move before calling again? If I use a foxpro, will changing to another sound during the hunt affect the hunt at all? Thanks for all the info!

changing the sounds during a stand is one of the best things you can do! dont over-do it but 3-4 sounds per 30 minute stand is a pretty good idea. I hunt pretty high pressured areas so I like to call for a little longer to give the creepers time to show up(between 30-40 minutes).
on how far to move that depends on terrain and how loud you call. if you are using an electronic call make sure you know that it can be turned up too loud, and if you are worried about how far between calls then you should be sure to keep the volume down. I am a Burnham Bros. Compucaller 3 fan so i dont know the volume options on a foxpro. I have moved 500-750 yards from a dry stand to a new spot and called up a hard charging coyote in less than 5 minutes, but that was in some pretty heavy brush so I am not endorsing that distance but I have personally done it.
keep at it and you will get there... and one of these days you will be on this site answering other peoples questions!!!

Home made decoys will help - day or night! Probably the easiest and cheapset is to tear some strips of cloth into 2"x6" strips - about 3 or 4 strips(mix light & dark colors). Tie them together into a small bundle, tie the bundle onto a 2ft section of 1/4' pvc or conduit. Stake the decoy in an opening, attach enough monofilament fishing line to reach where your set. During your calling, tug on the line to cause the decoy to move the cloth strips!
Cheap and effective!
