I'm really looking foward to get my first coyote. I went out Friday night, i think i called in 2, I saw there eyes with the light, but the time i got the gun up they were gone. I guess 2 million candle power is a bit too much.

I have yet to take a yote, but i am going for the dusk hours and i feel i am geting closer.

There are no concrete rules to coyote hunting, except that they are physically superior to you in every way. When "playing" the wind, if at all possible, I try to set up with a cross wind(wind at your 3 or 9 o'clock) this way I can see both "up" and "down" wind. They will at times come from your up wind side. A buddy is good to have as well, set a few yards apart with you backs facing each other, this way you have 360 degrees of view and both can see the "up" and "down" wind side. If using an e-caller, I place my e-caller about 30yds infront of me and 30yds up wind of me to get the sound away from my location enough that when they see the decoy, they don't see me, but are still in shotgun range in the event that one does ninja his way in that close. If setting up on the ridge of a hill, same set up, but make sure that one guy is on one side of the hill and the other guy is on the other side so you don't have blind spots.

If you aren't reasonably certain that you can connect with your shot for any reason, give him a pass. A coyote that is called and shot at and gets away, will go to ground and become a sneaky ninja, unlikely you will ever see him again. Give him a pass, call him in again later and kill'em.

Camo for coyotes is highly over rated(although it don't hurt either). Coyotes tend to key in on movement more than anything else. A good decoy (Turkey feather tied to a stake in the ground is cheap and effective) and little movement on your part are all that is really NEEDED to be successfull. I've called and killed coyotes while wearing shorts and flip-flops.

I'm no expert, but coyotes are all I hunt anymore. It's my passion and have dedicated myself to the "learning" of doing so....mostly through trial and a whole lot of error. Any questions, feel free to ask. Be glad to help, if I don't know the answer, I know people who will.

Is it possible for coyotes in a rural area to strictly nocturnal?

Hunting pressure is a major concern if you try to hunt during the day.
