Don't let em get you down. I posted pics of my spike and 5 point I killed last year and got beat up pretty bad. I was rescued by the old timers on here. Like you said, you kill what you want for the meat. I also kill for the meat. I would also kill a 160 if one walked out in front of me, but would probably be shaking too hard to actually take the shot. I live and hunt in East Texas and big deer are there, but far and few between. Like my Dad said "them horns don't taste too good". We live in a era where most of us haven't seen hard times and we are use to "bigger is better".
To me it is the thrill of being in the woods and getting back to nature and eating something I like to eat. I have a lot of family and now a lot of friends I work with on our lease and we have a good time out there. We don't drink at the lease and we help each other out. It is a getaway from our jobs and puts us in a quiet calming place to rest and enjoy ourselves.
I pay for the license, gun, ammo, lease payment, gas to get there, corn for the feeder, etc and it's my choice what to shoot as long as it is legal.
Everyone is free to have their opinions and voice them, that is what being an American is all about. A lot of great men and women have fought and died to ensure we are able to give our opinions on places like this forum. I for one am one who has fought and seen other lands where they don't have this right and will never have it. Do what pleases you as long as it is legal.
Oh, my pet peave.....not being able to hunt as I was taught, hunt and stalk. I can still do it in the national forest, but it is dangerous these days and I can't afford a lot of land to do it that way. So I am on a lease and sit in a stand where I don't get shot at.

Killing a 160" deer does not make you a better hunter than me.......it just means you have more money than me!

Actually i think thats a very popular opinion. Not one i agree with, but popular non the less. There's lots of big bucks out there, but there's one small problem, Big bucks are a whole different critter, their smart, mostly if not entirely nocturnal. They don't follow the same plan as lesser bucks. the don't use the same trails, they rarely come into feeders. There just plain harder to hunt and most people just don't have the patience, skills or the time to finally get that shot. So it's much easier to go to a ranch that specialises in big bucks for big money.

As long as it is legal, kill what you want. Pet-peeve's someone who is in charge and makes the rules for the lease and doesn't go by them,or doesn't make his teanage kids go by them.

HWY_MAN imho that is a good perspective on deer. I've noticed the same thing about the bigger bucks. My best buck was at thirty minutes after shooting time in the evening. I could not make him out with the naked eye. Good scopes are priceless!

I was always the campcook. I always had one guy carping about the food. His bacon wasn't done enough or it was over cooked, the eggs were too hard or too runny! Finally I got wise and the next meal I cooked I didn't set him a plate!! The do-do hit the fan then!!! I just grinned at him.

Now there is a good one!!!
And when you try to confront the lease DICtator about it you can expect things to go south real fast!
Dont ask me how I know!

My biggest pet peeve is when I drive around all nite wasting beer in my gut, stop, get out to relieve the bladder to see a 160 class buck at the edge of the road. After i take the time to get my convieniently loaded rifle and spotlight out and put the cross hairs on him, a car drives by scaring the 30 point buck off.
Then, my second pet peeve is when I get up to eat breakfast, and the camp cook has let the eggs get cold, and left the bacon soggy.
Third, while glassing a hillside, through my bells and whistles high powered scope, I spot another hunter looking at me through their scope.
Finally, having another hunter getting upset because I waited to long to field dress the 11 point buck (that is what I call a spike), because I was up all nite trying to be a better hunter by staying up all night drinking to stay awake while driving to find the biggest baddest buck, so I can be known as a true hunter. AND, he did not thank me when I didn't tag the 11 point buck cause it is a one buck county, and I told him I was meat hunting and game manageing.
I guess it does go to show you, that you can't please everyone!!!

I'm new here and maybe I should keep my mouth shut but I can't. The truth is if I was trying for game managment then I would let the 160 class buck walk and I would shoot the spikes,knot-heads and basketcases so that the 160 class buck could cover the does. I would also shoot the older does. If you ever hunted in East Texas you wouldn't be putting the man down for shooting younger bucks. If you let him walk you might not see another buck that year. I'm proud you can hunt where their is pleanty of 160 class bucks.

I have a friend that is a biologist at old sabine bottom wma in smith county, and for seven years we have been shooting deer like spikes, knot-heads and basketcases along with old does. The WMA now has the 13 inch spread rule even though their is not one in smith county. Before we started their was no nice bucks on the WMA. The last two years their have been several nice bucks taken. This would have never happen without taken the deer we took. I use to hunt lease land where we had real nice deer but I got hurt and now I can know longer do it. It is not true you wind up in life where you are because of the choices you make in life. For I never asked or plain to wind up in the shape I'm in today. It was a accident and I blame nobody for it.. PET PEEVES When I go to hunt now and hunters that can walk complaim to managment because I use my golf cart to get around because I can't walk. Because of there complaining I can no longer use my golf cart on the national forest or the WMA'S to hunt. To them who complain and can still walk and hunt I hope one day you wind up as me and can no longer hunt eather!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you dgilburt for noticeing me.

Good Post and Welcome.
A lot of folks think that they will always be as they are today, and don't contemplate the concept that thru health problems or accident, that they would not be able to get around physically as they do right now.

Houndog, I am truly upset at the fact that they will not allow you to use your golf cart. That just plain sux. I think that we should all write to the people in charge and try to change that ruling. Why don't you look up the adresses and post them on this forum so that we know who we need to contact to ensure that you can hunt the way you need to. I for one would write immediately. If we could get enough response to this problem, maybe we could fix it. I am sure there are others just like you that are having the same problem.

All you need to do is get on the Texas Parks & Wildlife website. They have a system for Public Comments and they welcome all input.

Yes, but if enough people start protesting the other way and start filing lawsuits, things might change.
If one group got it stopped, another group might get it re-instated. If a person does not want to complain on the state level, complain on the Federal level. TP&W receives lots of funding thru Federal programs and the Feds take ADA issues pretty seriously.

hopefully things will change with this lawsuit.
i can't understand why they would outlaw this, as long as your using electric and not driving around the whole place ruining everyones hunting.
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Houndog, if you can make it to Montague County, I have a place for you. Come join me.

I have made several phone calls to TP@W on this subject and I understand what they are saying. They are trying to protect thenselves. I never ran around in the woods and I never interfered with another hunter. I wasn't always the first hunter in the woods but I wasn't far behind him. I was always respectful of the other hunter and helped anybody I could. There was a time when I could still walk when a man from dallas fell out of a tree and broke his leg.I carried him about 5 miles on my back out of the woods then I got him help. I don't know if I can make it to Montague County to hunt with you. I now have to live on a fixed income I would love to try and maybe we can work something out.....THANK YOU
