no, i believe every area in texas can improve from QDM. but its naive to think that just because you and your neighborhood co-op , which may total less than 1000 acres, practice QDM, will grow deer that will score 160 B&C.

i hunt areas of the state where i don't have to worry much about the killing of immature bucks, mistakes happen, but they are the exception rather than the rule. i am very fortunate to be able to do this, and i know not everyone has this privilage, but saying that you won't kill a 160 class deer because of somebody else is B.S.

anyone could kill one if they wanted it bad enough. maybe could't do it at heir current lease due to the people shooting milk sucking bucks, but go hunt somewhere were they don't do that.

Hey cougerpee...did you mean to spell COUGAR wrong in your username? If you meant to, that is funny b/c of the urban dictionary meaning. So which type of couger are you?!?! Please tell me you are not a 60-80 year old woman who goes after young boys! Then, in reference to your username...you would be old lady pee. Tell me no!

We hunt 363 acres. My idea is this, if you kill that 2-1/2 year old 8-pt, he is dead. If you don't kill him, he has a chance to get bigger. Sure, he could jump the fence 5 minutes later and the neighbor could kill him but, if you kill him there is no chance for him to get bigger. The neighbors we have do not manage their game however, they do not hunt much either. Very little hunting pressure around us. Therefore, let them walk and if they make it thru the season, then next year he may be a better trophy.

Sure the quality on deer can improve and im not saying i dont want to see big bucks on the property but in e.tx most people have small amounts of property and its all but impossible to have big deer even if you let every buck walk away cause your neighbor may not and thats there choice, My whole point is i like to eat younger deer, and thats my choice but i wont be called a slob hunter because of what i prefer to kill and eat. Its great if you want to hold out for a mature deer but the way your comming across the thread is we idiots if we dont take nothing but mature animals and thats were the problems start.

So let me get this straight. No matter what you do (QDMA related) the quality of deer can not improve in an area?

No. Go to the Los Cazadores website and look at last years deer. Obviously, some deer have that potential.

My point is that if you aren't achieving the desired results from your deer hunting, you are solely responsible for that. You can pony up the money and hunt where someone else has managed the herd to that caliber or you can mange a herd yourself.

If you don't want to or can't spend that kind of money, that's not my fault. You are exactly where you put yourself in life. That doesn't make me an idiot.

If you can spend the money but don't do it, well that doesn't make me an idiot either.

My point is generally most unpopular with anyone under 50 years old. My point is that where you are in life is absolutely 100% the result of your own doing. Don't like your job? Who accepted that job for you? Don't make enough money? Who chose the paths led you to your current position? Not happy? Who controls (or defines) your happiness?

If you truly are committed to killing a 160 class buck, you absolutely will. If you're not, quit blaming others.

Practice doesn’t make perfect.
Practice makes permanent.

Hoytman haven't you realized it by now? It's much easier to call someone a slob hunter and blame them for your inability to take big bucks, than admit it's your own lack of knowledge and hunting skills, that keeps you from that goal. Had he not been so insulting from the git go, he might find some people on here who could help him achieve that goal.

If you take a real trophy buck, you can bet that he has scattered his genes pretty well. No problem.

My 8 year old Grandson killed a real trophy buck last year. It was a 5 point cull but it was his first deer. I'm glad it is out of the gene pool. Since he killed it, Grandpa was just as excited as he was.

Without a sense of urgency, nothing ever happens.

Wow, looks like me versus the world. First of all I'm not blaming anything on anyone. The 160 comment was a smart-[censored] response to a smart-[censored] question. This forum was created to express ones pet peeves regarding hunting. Does anyone truly think that the actions of others don't effect you? I hunt 4000 acres in south central Texas. The property is perfectly capable of producing big deer. However, as expressed, there are 3 or 4 guys on our lease that shoot the first 15 inch 8 point they see. I then have to listen to the belly aching about not having any big deer. THAT IS MY PET PEEVE. My other pet peeve is when people claim all they care about is the meat. The same guy would through the hammer down on an old buck in a heart beat if the opportunity presented itself. Oh but wait a minute. That old buck isn't going to taste near as good as that yearling fork horn that ran off after you shot. Talk about your B.S. By the way I'm not questioning anyones manhood, bow hunting skills (ND)or anything else that may have gotten bruised. I am expressing my Pet Peeves as asked. OH yeah txtrophy85, my biggest pet peeve of all is when people send you private emails supporting what you are saying then jump on the band wagon and peck the sick chicken. Please before anyone else beats me down with the drive-by postings. Please read my pet peeves and think for 2 minutes about what I'm saying.

Fat Cow - Poor Bull.

I think the term "hunter" has evolved a little over the years. It's gotten to the point everything has to be spelled out and defined. That's my pet peeve.

I've really wanted to jump in on this....here goes....

Maybe this PET PEEV will keep with the subject of the thread.

I hate it that TPWD says they are trying to regulate "Age Structure" of the herd (that's live deer) yet don't do "Age structure surveys (of live deer). They do biased counting of dead deer.

I hate it that TPWD lets the general hunting population rail on and on that this is about horns and quality antlers, and TPWD says this is about AGE STRUCTURE that they have no data on. TPWD misrepresented the public hearing presentaions as a trophy regulation. And some suckers fell for it. Thinking that it was TPWDs job to provide them with trophy deer.

I hate it that TPWD can't tell me the ageof a 13" deer is. Are they regulating age or horns.

I hate that noone in TPWD seems to have the honesty and credibility to derail this train. And separate themselves from the economics of the Texas deer industry and they can't just be a lowly honest wildlife biologist. If they chose that field of work that is fine. But if they want to get into trophy mgmnt at the expense of the general hunting public that is NOT FINE!! If that (trophy mgmnt) is their particular goal they should persue a career in the private (deer) sector. IMO

I DO like it that no more counties were added this year.

My only problem is why is it so impossible to believe somebody could be happy with a small 8pt buck! To me if the only way you can be happy is to kill a 160 class buck you are going to have a long unhappy life. Everybody would like to kill one but it rarely happens.

Here is an opinion that some will find unpopular.

Killing a 160" deer does not make you a better hunter than me.......it just means you have more money than me!

That was not aimed at anyone. Just thought I would chime in.
