Thanks to sirens mounted on the bumper and cab and shooting without hearing protection I have lost alot of hearing in my left ear. I'm right handed and I can attribute the hearing loss in my left ear to shooting a shotgun and driving with the driverside window open with siren on.
Hearing protection was never given a second thought when I was younger.
I use hearing protection now.

I am not really sure what chamber pressure has to do with loudness. A 16 inch Mark 7 gun on an Iowa Class Battleship has a normal service pressure around 49,700 psi. I am pretty sure it is louder than a 5.56 operating at 62,000 psi...... Is blowing through a straw louder than a blower nozzle on an air compressor at 175 psi? Is a .22 LR louder than a .22 short? Is a .22 cal pellet gun quieter than a .22 Hornet? Operating pressure has everything to do with it.

I appreciate the examples, but guess I just can't follow... Chamber pressure alone does not seem to me to account entirely for loudness. The Mark 7 I referenced operates at a far lower chamber pressure than the 5.56, though it does have far greater surface area and employs more than 4.5 million grains of gunpowder compared to the roughly 26 grains commonly found in a 5.56 round. Despite a 12 gauge operating at a chamber pressure of roughly 11,000 psi it does have far more surface area and does measure slightly louder than the average 223.

That a 12 measure louder than a 223 proves operating pressure is not important.

To me it would be like the difference in "loudness" of the .38 special v. .357 magnum. Same caliber, similar case size and a much higher operating pressure. What else could it be?

http://www.freehearingtest.com/hia_gunfirenoise.shtmlIn the link above it ranks different calibers and shows the decibel rating. It's a bit confusing but interesting nonetheless. My .38 v. .357 argument holds water but the 12ga v. .223 does not in the shorter barreled shotguns.
