my buddy says 223 so is a war lol

223 without a doubt. I can shoot 12 gauge all day without hearing protection, can't do that with 223 safely.

One shot from a 16 inch AR will ring your ears. Everyone wears hearing protection when they shoot AR's unless hunting. Nobody I knows wears hearing protection while shooting skeet all day.

I would be the velocity is what the massive difference is. One is give or take 1000-1300 FPS and the other 3000 FPS.

.223 is super sonic and thereby creates a sonic boom. Most 12ga are not super sonic.

actually they seem to be about the same or the 12 ga is louder with a barrel of comparable length according to the data skitini posted

both guns are h&r single shots the shot gun seems louder to me

Cheap target loads are not super sonic, its like shooting a 22.

Noise induced hearing loss begins with repeated exposure to 85 db and above. The average level of pain for most people is around 120 db. A typical 22 rifle generates 134db. The supersonic crack from a rifle bullet is a very minor sonic boom, directional and rarely (if ever) perceived by the shooter.

i think they are both loud and if you dont wear hearing protection shooting either one, if you arent deaf you will be soon

I made the mistake of shooting a 16" AR a few rounds without ear protection and my ears rang for the rest of the weekend. Like someone else said, I can dove/clay shoot my 12g all day without ear protection and I am fine.

The 5.56 operates at about 62,000 psi the 12 ga at about 11,000 psi. The .223 is much louder without question.

I won't shoot anything these days without hearing protection. I am completely deaf in my right ear and down to about 40% in my left.

I think that in actual decibal levels the 12 ga is louder but the .223 like most super sonic rounds has a lot sharper percussion and much higher pitch which causes more damage to your ears. I know I have been to a hearing protection clinic that was said at.That said you should always wear hearing protection. I shot about 25K rounds of .22lr a year for several years and I am just about deaf in my left ear.

I think it depends, my 223 in rem 700 is louder than my 870 pump wiht 28 inch barrel, but if I put my 18 inch slug barel on the 870 and shoot slugs it will leave you ringing all day without plugs.

Oh year and I dont care what 12ga you are shooting unless it is the snap cap designed to let your firing pin down easy it is hurint your ears.

That is probably the biggest contributor to it being louder!!

I am not really sure what chamber pressure has to do with loudness. A 16 inch Mark 7 gun on an Iowa Class Battleship has a normal service pressure around 49,700 psi. I am pretty sure it is louder than a 5.56 operating at 62,000 psi......
