I grew up in Parker county me and 2 outher friend were driving down a rule country road when we saw what looked to be three wolves. We went and told every one what we had seen and know one believed us . Well two years ago less than 1/2 a mile in a low spot in the road from where we saw what was believed to be wolves one got hit the game warden was called out he took the animal we were told that it was a New Mexico prairie wolf. He said that back in the 50's and early 60's TPW relised some trying to establish them back into ther natural habitat they were all thought to be shot out and poisoned by the ranchers in the area but a small group has seem to found away to survive. There is alot of open land in the area so still today they have little human contact .

From everything I read, "prairie wolf" is just another name for coyote.

Hey here's an idea. Why don't you NOT shoot that animal. There were wolves in Texas at one time before they were hunted out. It's a shame that you think it's a wolf and yet you feel the need to kill it. Use some discretion when you have a weapon. If it is in fact a wolf, let it be. T4PL, why don't you go hug a tree. Neither coyotes or wolves are good for the whitetail population in Texas. If you cannot add anything constructive to the forum, please, do not comment at all. X2. Haha exactly what I thought!

I've thought for a long time that there are sub species of wolf. Eastern Washington has "timber coyotes." I also think that wolves can be reestablishing themselves as far south as Texas. I wish we could ship you a dozen or so, as we have so many that they really hit the deer and moose hard, especially in the winter. We can shoot five a year, but they are unnaturally smart. Smart enough to be in Texas again, too. They were there before.

Predators in controlled numbers are NOT detrimental to the population of deer or any animal. They primarily weed out the sick, old, and feeble. Thereby improving the gene pool, this is called natural selection were only the strong survive. That is an ignorant comment. There have been many studies showing detrimental depredation by coyotes on whitetail fawns. 50% to 70% of the fawn crop is lost to coyotes in some areas. Some places black bears can be just as devastating to the fawn crop. If you think that is not detrimental to a population you need to wake up and control the predators friend. Geez doesnt sound like an ignorant comment to me. I think you just forgot to read a keyword

Isn't a thick coat on a yote a good sign of a cold winter? Those games pics posted sure look like they have nice coats, and that was earlier in Nov.

Key word being "controlled". Yeah, saw that in retrospect. Still, if you are seeing and hearing them, they aren't controlled. I'm a little gun shy as we are over run with the buggers right now.

I hate it when guys say theres not this or not that . This is an open country where animals are definately known to roam . So whos to say there aint none of this and there aint none of that . There hasnt been a bear in my area in a VERY LONG time and yet last year they were spotted in several game cameras and by several ranchers . The game wardens even tracked them down the wichita river for awhile . Still many say there ARE NO BEARS in wichita county . LOL Anything is possible when it comes to wild animals and the move . wyoming , minnesota and mexico aint that far off . Most likely this wasnt a wolf but who knows . some say there isnt any black panthers even though there are sightings daily throughout the country . If it was me id ground check it .

penguins would be a threat to the chupa population in texas therefore we need to eradicate any that we see.

I went to the mans house where i saw the wolfs for Christmas because my girlfriend is friends with his daughter . I have never talked to him before i brought this up to him and he said that in 1971 him and two Texas game wardens went on ther property and a few surrounding ranches and they shot 3 timber wolves and 4 grey wolves in a 5 week time frame . He said they had a hog farm and they would come thru about every morning around 7am to see if any hogs had diciest in the night . He told me he would look to see if he could find some pics of one of the timber wolves that they had shot . You can believe what you want but i know what i saw i have hunted for 24+ yrs and i have seen a lot of coyotes and these were not coyotes these did not run like any coyote i have ever seen before and were between 70-80 lbs.

Not that I don't believe you, but I would like to see this info for myself. I know coyotes can and do eat fawns, but I didn't think it was anywhere near those #'s. I was thinking more like 3-5% maybe 10% at most. Can you provide me with a link to one of these studies?
