Twice this season in Montague Co. about 1/2 mile off the Red River I have seen what appears to be a very large coyote. I've shot hundreds of coyotes and this one appears to be about twice as big as any I have ever shot. If I get another shot at him I'm going to shoot. Are there any wolves in North Texas? He was about the same color as a coyote but seemed to have more white around the face. Probably just a coyote, what do you think?

Took a nice buck opening weekend and set the game cam up on the carcass. These were taken in Montague County!

No wild wolves left in Texas. The red wolf of East Texas interbred with coyotes as their numbers dwindled, so there may be some influence from them somewhere, but nothing pure left.

This is Texas, anything is possible. Wolves have been de-listed so when you shoot & IF it is, you won't get in trouble.

Anybody thought of a cross breeding between a coyote and a domestic dog? The offspring are supposed to still be wild like a coyote only bigger in body size.

As stated above, there are no wolves in Texas.

Coydogs do exist.

There were some folks breeding those wolf-dogs a few years ago and try to raise them as pets. They're likely still doing it, but I read an article about it several years ago.

I dated a girl 15 years ago that had a family member with some of these "wolf" dogs. They evidently looked just like a wolf and were only partially tame.

Anyway, could be one of those. I think most got loose as no fence would hold them.

I have seen wolves for sale in the paper around here before. Can't say some haven't got loose or released. That would be cool to see one though.

I meant to add that it's most likely a large coyote. I shot a couple last year that were bigger, in appearance. than my 95 pound lab.

Bob is correct! No red wolf sightings in Texas in two decades!
Coydogs are quite common in the northeast Texas area! Even have a different type howl than coyotes.

Of course it could easily be a large coyote. I shot one a few years ago that weighed 40 lbs, and have seen 50-60 lbs coyotes in south Texas!

Hey here's an idea. Why don't you NOT shoot that animal. There were wolves in Texas at one time before they were hunted out. It's a shame that you think it's a wolf and yet you feel the need to kill it. Use some discretion when you have a weapon. If it is in fact a wolf, let it be.

T4PL, why don't you go hug a tree. Neither coyotes or wolves are good for the whitetail population in Texas. If you cannot add anything constructive to the forum, please, do not comment at all.

Oh, Spikeslayer has made another comment. You're right, coyotes and wolves do take from the whitetail population. You're probably upset because this may limit your chances of taking a trophy spike. Were'nt you supposed to be deleting yourself from the forum?

Due to cross breeding with domestic dogs and with wolves, there IS a sub species of coyote that is anywhere from 50 to 75lbs and even heavier. Grand Prairie animal control trapped what appeared to be a massive male coyote 2 years ago, it looked like a yote on steroids! after drawing blood samples and a tooth for DNA the tests from Texas A&M came back and showed traces of domestic dog DNA. If you do a Google search on large coyotes there is also a species of coyote in the north east united states that is about twice the size of yotes here in Texas. So is it a wolf? probably not, is it a super sized cross bred yote? yeah I think so.....

If you look up the eastern coyotes, you will find they are larger because they did breed with wolves as TX Deer Hunter stated.

Thank you Public Land, I know I'm right. Your second sentence is just a another example that proves that your only defense for your ignorant comments is to put down the way another individuals hunt. Weren't you suppose to be deleting yourself in general?

Not anymore. A federal judge put a stop to it. They screwed Idaho over big time.

I had a friend whose dad was not very smart and owned a wolf/dog. That thing was freakin huge. The guy ended up getting bit and got rid of it. Wouldn't surprise me if you saw something similar. The dog/wolf combo in this case looked just like a wolf. Especially from a distance.

Killed one when I was in Jr High in NE TX that was abnormally large. I mean it must have been 60-80 lbs as it took two of us to lift it. No pics to proof it but to this day I have never killed or seen one that big or even close.

Predators in controlled numbers are NOT detrimental to the population of deer or any animal. They primarily weed out the sick, old, and feeble. Thereby improving the gene pool, this is called natural selection were only the strong survive.

That is an ignorant comment. There have been many studies showing detrimental depredation by coyotes on whitetail fawns. 50% to 70% of the fawn crop is lost to coyotes in some areas. Some places black bears can be just as devastating to the fawn crop. If you think that is not detrimental to a population you need to wake up and control the predators friend.
