To me a elk is just alot different than a whitetail when it comes to HF. When I think of elk hunting I think public land hunting in some state other than Texas which is going to be a challenging hunt. 1000 acres isn't a very big place to hide a animal that size with that big of horns.

I agree with you are saying about an elk and I really do not care to shoot one either in the wild or in a HF. Just not my cup of tea so to speak hunting an elk.

Since the hunter isn't the one who posted the pic, it's not like he's bragging about it. He probably doesn't care if anyone else likes his elk or how it was shot. By the look on his face, he's happy and that's what matters.

Oh, I think it's great that Texas may have produced a world record Elk..... but it's not the same(to me) as if it we're taken say in Big Bend Park where there aren't any fences!
I'd ask him if he's pregnant. He missed a s__tload of periods. I'll take "things that look like a uterus" for $200 Alex.

X2 on the bold part...do not like my friends to guide ( fix me up ) me on a date with a gal that is "perfect" for me....I ended up coming home with one leg chewed off! I've heard of having to chew an arm off, but never a leg. She was part Chupa!

The man had a great time, enjoyed himself and has a wonderful trophy in his and many others eyes....and I am very happy for him. High Fence-Low Fence-No Fence-Corn Feeders... makes no difference to me....if it's legal and the person has fun...GREAT But yes I am just a little jealous....just followed the link to the lodge you have to book with and the price was a little higher than posted earlier. Wish I had that kind of money...guess I'll go to work on Monday... New Pending World Record Elk 435"-465" Trophy Fee - $12,500 466"-499" Trophy Fee - $17,500 501"-544" Trophy Fee - $35,000 http://www.texashuntlodge.com/elk_hunt_package.asp

Well I've been lucky to draw 3 elk tags in NM during the past 5 years. I don't believe Boone and Crockett will quantify this elk for record status due to the HF hunt. It's impressive for sure....but won't impress other elk hunters and RMEF members.

Why does every thread these days turn into an argument on HF vs. LF? Just admire the animal!!
On another subject about the picture: I thought this and supressed the notion but a friend mentioned it today and now I'm wondering again. Does that Elk look like he has some Red Stag blood in him? His horns, especially the right appear to crown somewhat. If he does what will that do to the record???

Awesome Bull....regardless!
Yes, elk are "native" but not classified as a GAME animal in Texas.....back about 40 years ago, they were a game animal, but were either hunted out or left Texas completely. They have slowly returned, and probably need to be protected a few years so that the herd can expand! Elk were native to Texas and there is a Boone and Crockett entry from Denton County many years ago. There are native free range elk in far west Texas and I believe still a few in the Panhandle. The elk were reclasified in the late 80s or early 90s to exotic game with part of teh reason being the number of red deer crossing with elk and I think the parks and wildlife departmant was tired of doing the surveys and issueing tags for teh native elk, with so many elk and red deer already on ranches that are truely exotics. If you look at this "Rocky Mountian Elk" that rack sure looks like a red deer what with the crown of points not the typical swept antlers of a Rocky Mountian elk. Kerr County is not an area of the state with native elk anymore and though this is one heck of an animal I would believe this is a fine example of livestock found on many ranches around the state and in many other locals. Yes I have hunted high fenced ranches for exotics before and probally will again but I consider those "hunts" harvest trips not really hunting and do not consider the animals fantastic though they are, in the same catagory as true wild game. No matter how big the place is and not feed high protien diets to give them an unfare advantage.

You are correct that B&C will not reconize this animal or anyother exotic from Texas, There was a 400+ free raange native elk that was killed close to Marfa that they will nto consider since it is an Exotic in Texas

For those of you that brought up the spider bull do a little research on the matter. You might be surprised. Take a look at spider bull governors tag etc. The spider bull was bought which is no different than what this guy did. Either way i think both are great animals and would be happy having them on my wall regardless of where they came from

What a joke and shame on SCI and Trophy Game Records!
Hunting elk, which are migratory animals(unlike whitetails), behind a high fence in Texas is a crock. Yep, it is legal, and if that is what fires your rocket, got for it. It is not my cup of tea. It is not like hunting exotics or whitetail, IMHO.
I guarantee he could have gotten a "real" elk hunt for what he paid for that one.

I just hate the fact that people from states like AZ,CO, and N.M think when they see things like this. Guides and hunters who bust their butts for months in 10-12,000 elevation trying to kill something that should be able to roam for hundreds of miles instead have to see something like this. An earlier post was right about trophy elk tags being "bought", but I wouldn't compare those types of hunts to this in a million years! If a lot hunters in TX think it's a joke; I can only imagine what they think! I guess for someone who just killed a possible world record; he really doesn't care what they think though!

And also, it doesn't matter, if you have enough money you can shoot a record animal. The spider bull proved that, this one does the same thing.

Bob in TX is right....for the price that guy paid for a HF hunt...he could have paid for a guide/outfitter/landowner tag on a fair chase hunt in the Rockies somewhere.

if there were an abundance of free ranging Elk that size roaming around, we would hear a lot more about it.

What is the difference between that and some of these deer that are said to be free rangeing?

Sweet Jesus guys.....can't some of yall just stop your pissing and moaning, and just appreciate an animal without all the negative comments from the peanut gallery? Did any of you have a momma that used to tell you "if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all"? Damn.....some of yall are worse than a whiney little school-girl.
I'm sure the hunter doesn't give a crap whether you agree with high fences or not.....he sure looks happy to me. If you don't like it.....don't look at it, and don't hunt there.....nobody will force you to, I promise.

Question????? If it was killed on a 1000 acre high fence, does it still qualify for the world record?? For SCI estate division and the old Burkett Record book. Not B&C or Pope & Young. So that means the record doesn't mean squat!!! anyone can buy good genetics in a semen straw and feed the test tube baby enuff protein to make a world record! again NOT IMPRESSED all this guy did was pay a ton of money for a worthless animal......
