I just read the article and I know Dennis Kneese. That sounds like a good hunt and it's definately a great Elk.

Nice elk, but a HF hunt for an elk is a joke, especially if it is only 1000 acres. I've been around elk in a HF and they would be alot easier to find and kill than a whitetail. Not impressed at all

LOL Gimme a break, 3250.00-11,000.00 per elk plus 250/day for guide in a high fence pen. Yeah, real accomplishment. Price list

such anger... or is it jealousy.... or class envy... hopefully none of these....
i get that maybe most of us cant afford that elk, but it sure is a nice looking animal and to that hunter it is a great feat. look at the smile on his face. he chose to hunt the biggest he could find and searched for 2 days while passing other large bulls until he could get the big one. hats off to him.
from a fair chase perspective, i understand some would not find this hunt "hard" enough, but to others it would be a very hard hunt and they may not be able to finish it.
i wonder how different this is from the "hard, fair chase hunts" that are always held up as the standard... the hunts in alaska for elk, moose, grizzly, africa for plains animals... etc... how is paying a PH, whose main job besides not getting you killed, is to use his experience to put you on the right animal to kill. you may have to follow him for 5 days of tough work up in the mountains or across the bush, but ultimately he is still doing most of the hunting work. using this as a compare, it is almost like having Eharmony find you a date. someone else is doing the expert work so you can finish the job..... and to be clear i am not knocking using a PH or Eharmony... only making a point
for the record, i hope to be able to do a hunt like above someday when i am willing and able to shell out $10k for the hunt and more to get my tropies back...
the point i am making is we seem to be way too judgemental of how people hunt and if we dont like it or it is not in our reach financially, then we slam it publicly.

Well said but I am afraid it falls on deaf ears and bigger egos.

NIce Elk.
All are valid opinions. And while some of us would hunt there and some wouldn't, at least we are all hunting.
Without knowing the terrain exactly, a 1000 acre place in Kerr County could be pretty rugged....
I struggle all the time internally with where the line is... The guy in Fannin County with the Elk in a 32 acre pasture, is too small for me........ The ranch in south texas with 12000 acres, is fair for me...
I don't think you can set a magic number without seeing the terrain and behaviour of the animal

in all honesty I'de rather have the hi$ guides on any big game hunt, even on public land out west. Done right to offer you a hi percentage chance on a "trophy", it ends up being cheaper than dragging 8-10 folks with you out there and putting them up to split up and help you glass. as for the bolded part....direct hit, Cboone!!!

I don't see most posters really knocking the hunter. The bull was taken inside a one and a half square mile enclosure. Some readers will be impressed, others not....it is what it is. I am reminded of that old saying about lipstick and pigs at the moment...

How is this eligible for the record books if it was shot inside a high fence? I thought B/C & P/Y did not take records from animals inside a high fence? and 1000 acre HF is a BS hunt! not like they had the track him, all they did was sit by a feeder and shoot him at maybe 50 yards! Chasing a world record bull up and down the mountains of Arizona or Colorado and taking a 250yd shot is a heck of a lot harder than riding around in a 50 thousand dollar pick up truck checking feeders..... I AM NOT IMPRESSED....

There is no anger or jealousy here, if someone wants to spend their money on a lodge and private guide, to each his own.
Quite frankly to me hunting is about sleeping in a tent, telling stories at night around a camp fire while roasting weenies and eating bisquits out of a Dutch oven in the morning.
As far as an accomplishment or recognition, there is none. This is the same as if some joker goes out and spends 200,000 on a sports car then runs it around the track on a Saturday afternoon.
Sure it's an incredible car and I can appreciate that and if thats what you wanna do with your money fine. But don't expect me to shake your hand and pat you on the back for being a great race car driver cause your not, your just a guy with a hobby and a lot of money to spend.

If they had driven around and that same 50 thousand dollar pick up truck in AZ or CO. and shot that elk out of an alfalfa field, would you have been impressed with him then? I doubt it but it would be "fair chase" by your definition. I would not be but the hunter can hunt however and where ever he likes.

Question????? If it was killed on a 1000 acre high fence, does it still qualify for the world record??
