I made this post as a joke last night. I was overserved.

I, by no means, think I'm the best. I like to hunt with lots of different people. I think you can always learn something from others no matter how long you've been in the game.

There are some really good waterfowlers on this forum.

I truly believe the best duck hunters in the world are people you never see or hear from. I know some river rats who would not give away their secrets if you paid them. I think the reason they are so good is because they are not under pressure to perform. No offense but some of these people who are on Pro Staffs or Field Staffs are a joke.

JJ is the exception. He knows how and when to call but I bet even he will tell you it all hinges around location. I also submit that I have known some people who could not call to save their lives and they are incredible shots. So much so, I stand in awe and say "How did they do that?" when I hunt with them. Then others know how to navigate in the dark like nobody's business. Others, can do things to an outboard motor when it breaks down only using the bare minimum of tools that astound you. There are hunters who can build well-built a duck blind or dog stand in no time and make it look easy. There are so many elements to duck hunting. It is hard to master them all.

You make your own luck.

You can be the best caller, have the best blocks, the best dog, the best boat, gun, etc.

If there are no ducks where you're hunting, you're not gonna kill anything.

Yep, assuming you can shoot, scouting is the key to killing ducks on public.

Smartest thing I have heard come this boy yet! up

Never stop learnin'...always have your ears open, you never know when someone will show you something you had never thought about.

I will say this, also, listen to old timers, they have been there an done that, and most of them with nothing that we have today to aid us.

I have always found it interesting that everyone has mentality that you have to have this boat, this call, these waders, this truck, this four wheeler, and spend thousands of dollars on a private lease to kill ducks.

I know plenty of people that can walk in with a dozen flambeau mallards, a duck call in their pocket, pair of cheap waders, no dog, and a cheap pump shotgun, and kill a limit of 5 mallard drakes and a pintail kicker...and walk out...

Moose, I know you had said you posted it up as a joke...

But people do like to size themselves up...especially guys that are new to the sport.

If you scout the afternoon before, and you find lots of ducks on the water and where they are feeding, and better yet, you see the spot where they take off for their roost that night, then that will be the x the next morning (assuming wind conditions are right). Step 2 will be to get yourself in front of the x in shooting range the next morning where the ducks cannot bust you. If you do those 2 things and you can shoot, it should be an easy limit. I like it when Duck Commander says you want to look like a good duck caller, just be where the ducks want to land the next day. grin

I agree 100% first paragraph applies to a lot of things fishing or hunting an such.

As for the second paragraph i hope to be that type myself soon..never "seriously" got to hunt ducks but have always hoped for the opportunity to have the experience.

The way things should be are not often the way things are.....

Can you kill limits on public lakes? More times than not

Do you have private spots to hunt? Nope

Can you run a mallard call? Good nuff, I reckon

Got some duck bands? No, but every year, somebody with me gets one.

What is your decoy status? Too dang many

Do you have a boat? Do you walk in? I walk from the truck to my boat, then walk from wherever I hide the boat to the blind I just built.

Fresh or Salt? Both

Are you the best? I seriously doubt it, but I'm good nuff to feed the family.

Whatcha got? A strong addiction to smokin kwack.
